This graduate-level primer presents a tutorial introduction to and overview of N = 2 supergravity theories - with 8 real supercharges and in 4, 5 and 6 dimensions. First, the construction of such theories by superconformal methods is explained in detail, and relevant special geometries are obtained and characterized. Following, the relation between the supergravity theories in the various dimensions is discussed. This leads eventually to the concept of very special geometry and quaternionic-Kähler manifolds. This concise text is a valuable resource for graduate students and young researchers wishing to enter the field quickly and efficiently.
The articles in this book are written versions of talks presented at a conference organized by the TMR network in Corfu. The main theme of the conference was the interconnection between string theory and gauge theory. These very recent developments draw from many aspects of string theory, supergravity and supersymmetric gauge field theory. For students starting their research there is a great deal of background material that they have to absorb in order to be able to follow current developments. With this in mind the editors have included pedagogical lectures on background material and recent developments. This book is based upon lectures presented in the summer of 2009 at the INFN-Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati School on Attractor Mechanism, directed by Stefano Bellucci. The symposium included such prestigious lecturers as S. Ferrara, G. Dall'Agata, J.F. Morales, J. Simón and M. Trigiante. All lectures were given at a pedagogical, introductory level, which is reflected in the specific "flavor" of this volume. The book also benefits from extensive discussions about, and the related reworking of, the various contributions. It is the fifth volume in a series of books on the general topics of supersymmetry, supergravity, black holes and the attractor mechanism.

This volume contains the proceedings of the conference String-Math 2015, which was held from December 31, 2015–January 4, 2016, at Tsinghua Sanya International Mathematics Forum in Sanya, China. Two of the main themes of this volume are frontier research on Calabi-Yau manifolds and mirror symmetry and the development of non-perturbative methods in supersymmetric gauge theories. The articles present state-of-the-art developments in these topics. String theory is a broad subject, which has profound connections with broad branches of modern mathematics. 'What makes this collection unusual and refreshing is that it is not the more common ‘Festschrift’ written by specialists for specialists, but a broad set of topical summaries and analyses addressed to a wide readership of particle physicists. Inevitably, some of the sections are more advanced in their treatment than others, but most of the material will be accessible and helpful to researchers at all levels, and in particular to those working on experiments at CERN, where Altarelli spent many years in the theory group.
