Short Stories, 1895-1926

Published to coincide with the 40th anniversary of Walter de la Mare's death, this is the first of a three-volume collection bringing together his short stories. It includes The Riddle and Other Stories (1923) containing 15 stories, Ding, Dong Bell (1924) containing four stories, and The Connoisseur and Other Stories (1926) containing nine stories. Also included are 14 uncollected stories published between 1895 and 1920. De la Mare's earliet published works were stories, the first of them appaering in 1895. There was always a creative counterpoint between the themes and imagery of his prose and poetry, and a full understanding of either is unattainable without knowledge of both. The publication of this volume coincides with the 40th anniversary of Walter de la Mare's death. Kings College London will be holding a one-day conference featuring the stories of Walter de la Mare to coincide with the publication of volume one on November 7, 1996, including speakers such as Professor John Bayley, Julia Briggs, and Russell Hoban.

Walter de la Mare

This book aims to put Walter de la Mare back on the literary map. A writer beloved by many, he has nevertheless remained on the sidelines of literary history. Walter de la Mare: Critical Appraisals promises to restore his reputation as one of the most memorably haunting of poets, as well as a peculiarly unnerving writer of ghost stories. A collection of varied, wide-ranging essays on de la Mare’s poetry, stories, novels, reviews and lectures, it puts his work beside that of many of his famous contemporaries, including Thomas Hardy, Robert Frost, W. H. Auden, T. S. Eliot and Katherine Mansfield. It also contains an invaluable survey of his archive, much of it unpublished, and a number of ne...

Sir John Soane Architect

"Sir John Soane (1753-1837) has come to be regarded as one of the great architects of late 18th and early 19th century Europe, and contemporary architects and designers are becoming increasingly influenced by the subtleties of the unique 'Soane style'. Dorothy Stroud's classic book, which is appearing in paperback for the first time, in an updated second edition, is the culmination of a lifetime's research. It brings together all the threads in her previous writings on Soane, combining a concise biography of the architect with a comprehensive and fully illustrated survey of his works. After studying in Italy, Soane built up a considerable private practice and a reputation that secured his ap...

William Nicholson, Painter

  • Categories: Art

This volume provides a documentary account of William Nicholson's life and work. It uses contemporary records, articles and reminiscences, and the numerous letters William wrote to his family and friends. The text considers what Nicholson painted, why and for whom; what spurred him on to experimention and artistic adventure; how he fared in times of elation and anguish; how he combined the serious playfulness of his vision with a deep affection for nature; and how he collaborated with some of the leading men of his day, among them Rudyard Kipling, J.M. Barrie, William Orpen, Edwin Lutyens, Robert Graves (his son-in-law), and Winston Churchill. The aim is to do justice to the diversity of William Nicholson's work, and provide a detailed portrait of the man and the artist.

The Life of Henry Moore

  • Categories: Art

Henry Moore's rise from Yorkshire miner's son to international acclaim as the twentieth century's greatest sculptor is one of the most remarkable stories in British art. In this revised, updated, expanded and redesigned new edition of The Life of Henry Moore, Roger Berthoud charts Moore's transition from controversial young modernist to pillar of the art-world establishment, garlanded with domestic and foreign honours. His account is enriched by the weekly interviews he did with Moore -- and his wife Irina -- before the sculptor's death in 1986, aged eighty-eight. At home and abroad Moore's sculptures aroused strong passions and were often the object of abuse, sharp criticism and even physic...

The one-day conference featuring the stories of Walter de la Mare at King's College, University of London, coinciding with the publication of Volume One in November 1996 revealed the intense interest there is in his fiction. It was attended by some 35 people from around Britain, and the talks and discussion were extremely lively. Among the speakers were Professor John Bayley, Professor Julia Briggs and Russell Hoban.
