Walter de la Mare

This book aims to put Walter de la Mare back on the literary map. A writer beloved by many, he has nevertheless remained on the sidelines of literary history. Walter de la Mare: Critical Appraisals promises to restore his reputation as one of the most memorably haunting of poets, as well as a peculiarly unnerving writer of ghost stories. A collection of varied, wide-ranging essays on de la Mare’s poetry, stories, novels, reviews and lectures, it puts his work beside that of many of his famous contemporaries, including Thomas Hardy, Robert Frost, W. H. Auden, T. S. Eliot and Katherine Mansfield. It also contains an invaluable survey of his archive, much of it unpublished, and a number of ne...

Sir John Soane Architect

"Sir John Soane (1753-1837) has come to be regarded as one of the great architects of late 18th and early 19th century Europe, and contemporary architects and designers are becoming increasingly influenced by the subtleties of the unique 'Soane style'. Dorothy Stroud's classic book, which is appearing in paperback for the first time, in an updated second edition, is the culmination of a lifetime's research. It brings together all the threads in her previous writings on Soane, combining a concise biography of the architect with a comprehensive and fully illustrated survey of his works. After studying in Italy, Soane built up a considerable private practice and a reputation that secured his ap...

William Nicholson, Painter

  • Categories: Art

This volume provides a documentary account of William Nicholson's life and work. It uses contemporary records, articles and reminiscences, and the numerous letters William wrote to his family and friends. The text considers what Nicholson painted, why and for whom; what spurred him on to experimention and artistic adventure; how he fared in times of elation and anguish; how he combined the serious playfulness of his vision with a deep affection for nature; and how he collaborated with some of the leading men of his day, among them Rudyard Kipling, J.M. Barrie, William Orpen, Edwin Lutyens, Robert Graves (his son-in-law), and Winston Churchill. The aim is to do justice to the diversity of William Nicholson's work, and provide a detailed portrait of the man and the artist.

Short Stories 1927-1956

This is the second of a three-volume collection bringing together Walter de la Mare's short stories. It includes On the Edge (1930), The Wind Blows Over (1936), and A Beginning and Other Stories (1955), as well as four uncollected stories and four unpublished stories. The one-day conference featuring the stories of Walter de la Mare at King's College, University of London, coinciding with the publication of Volume One in November 1996 revealed the intense interest there is in his fiction. It was attended by some 35 people from around Britain, and the talks and discussion were extremely lively. Among the speakers were Professor John Bayley, Professor Julia Briggs and Russell Hoban.

Locating the Gothic in British Modernity

This study considers how British literature from the late-Victorian era to the 1930s draws upon Gothic and supernatural narrative and imagery in its representations of place, whether metropolitan, suburban or rural; it argues that this period of dramatic socio-cultural change is shadowed by a corresponding evolution in Gothic literary representation.

Flint Architecture of East Anglia

"The numerous colour plates and black and white photographs convey the fascinating multiplicity of styles to be found, some of them reminiscent of the work of contemporary artists like Richard Long, and the virtuoso skills of the craftsmen who created them. There is a deeper consciousness and wider appreciation of vernacular architecture today in Britain than there has ever been, and the book could well inspire people to explore new possibilities in the use of flint architecture. Apart from its general appeal, it is a book that will strike a particular chord among architects, designers, craftsmen, local historians, artists and regional councils responsible for planning and conservation."--BOOK JACKET.
