The Appian Way
The Appian Way was the first great artery from Rome to southern Italy and the model for all roads originating in the ancient capital. Conceived by Appius Claudius in 312 B.C., the thoroughfare provided easy access to Capua, the most important junction in southern Italy, and facilitated Roman expansion into the southern peninsula. Paved in black basalt, the road was flanked by level pedestrian footpaths and bordered by tombs, villas, and pleasant rest and refreshment areas along its 365 miles, which could be walked in thirteen to fourteen days. The Ancient Appian Way provides an engaging account of the Appian Way's origins and historical context. Inquisition, Conversion, and Foreigners in Baroque Rome
In Rome, where strategies to re-establish Roman Catholic orthodoxy were formulated, the problem of how to deal with foreigners and particularly with ‘heretics’ coming from Northern Europe was an important priority throughout the early modern period. Converting foreigners had a special significance for the Papacy. This volume, which includes several case studies, explores the meaning of conversion and the changes of policy adopted by the church bodies set up to protect orthodoxy. It uses inquisitorial documents (from Archivio della Congregazione per la dottrina della Fede) and sources from other archives and libraries, both in Rome and elsewhere. This book is an updated and revised translation of Convertire lo straniero (Viella, 2011), including a bibliography reflecting the most recent scholarship on its subject.

Il volume, catalogo dell’omonima mostra, vuole illustrare l’importante stagione di studi archeologici sui Colli Albani dipanatasi nel corso dell’Ottocento. L’importanza e la diffusione nel territorio di rovine, spesso monumentali e lo stretto evocativo rapporto che si poteva intrecciare con le numerose fonti antiche (scritte ed epigrafiche), ne fecero uno dei luoghi privilegiati di ricerca, contribuendo in maniera determinante alla definizione della professione di archeologo. Il volume è organizzato in 4 distinte sezioni: la prima, articolata in saggi di inquadramento generale della questione; la seconda, dedicata ai protagonisti di questa stagione di studi; la terza, con le schede sui singoli siti scavati e studiati in quegli anni; la quarta, il vero e proprio catalogo, con una scelta di reperti significativi provenienti da quei siti.

Pantheons
The institution of the pantheon has come a long way from its classical origins. Invented to describe a temple dedicated to many deities, the term later became so far removed from its original meaning, that by the twentieth century, it has been able to exist independently of any architectural and sculptural monument. This collection of essays is the first to trace the transformation of the monumental idea of the pantheon from its origins in Greek and Roman antiquity to its later appearance as a means of commemorating and enshrining the ideals of national identity and statehood. Illuminating the emergence of the pantheon in a range of different cultures and periods by exploring its different manifestations and implementations, the essays open new historical perspectives on the formation of national and civic identities.
