Dreaming with Open Eyes examines visual symbolism in late seventeenth-century Italian opera, contextualizing the genre amid the broad ocularcentric debates emerging at the crossroads of the early modern period and the Enlightenment. Ayana O. Smith reevaluates significant aspects of the Arcadian reform aesthetic and establishes a historically informed method of opera criticism for modern scholars and interpreters. Unfolding in a narrative fashion, the text explores facets of the philosophical and literary background and concludes with close readings of text and music, using visual symbolism to create readings of gender and character in two operas: Alessandro Scarlatti's La Statira (Rome, 1690), and Carlo Francesco Pollarolo's La forza della virtù (Venice, 1693). Smith’s interdisciplinary approach enhances our modern perception of this rich and underexplored repertory, and will appeal to students and scholars not only of opera, but also of literature, philosophy, and visual and intellectual cultures.
This volume takes a fresh and innovative approach to the history of ideas of work, concerning perceptions, attitudes, cultures and representations of work throughout Antiquity and the medieval and early modern periods. Focusing on developments in Europe, the contributors approach the subject from a variety of angles, considering aspects of work as described in literature, visual culture, and as perceived in economic theory. As well as external views of workers the volume also looks at the meaning of work for the self-perception of various social groups, including labourers, artisans, merchants, and noblemen, and the effects of this on their self-esteem and social identity. Taking a broad chronological approach to the subject provides readers with a cutting-edge overview of research into the varying attitudes to work and its place in pre-industrial society.

Storico curioso dai molteplici interessi, Gianvittorio Signorotto ha saputo riflettere, nel corso della sua attività di studioso, su molte questioni: le vicende religiose dell’Italia moderna, la Lombardia spagnola e borromaica, la magnificenza delle corti europee, i concetti di progresso, crisi e decadenza. Seguendo come filo conduttore la modernità, il volume raccoglie i saggi con cui amici e colleghi hanno reso omaggio ai molti ambiti che le ricerche di Signorotto hanno stimolato ed esplorato, attraversando alcuni nuclei salienti: l’intreccio tra politica, religione e diplomazia, passando per Milano; l’incontro fra l’Europa cattolica e gli altri mondi; la riflessione storiografica e culturale. Il quadro che ne emerge è quello di un mondo in costante trasformazione, in cui il mestiere di storico assume, come Signorotto ha mostrato, un valore tutt’oggi inesaurito.
