Kant's Shorter Writings

Kant's Shorter Writings

This collection highlights the importance of Kant’s shorter writings, which span the entire intellectual career of this seminal thinker. It contrasts with other philosophical studies of Kant’s work, which typically focus on a specific period of his career, and on either his theoretical philosophy or his practical philosophy. These shorter works offer a framework for understanding several central questions of critical philosophy in the context of Kant’s complete corpus of writings. As such, this volume provides a ground-breaking approach to contemporary Kant studies by offering a new interpretive perspective to enable Kant scholars to advance their research projects. At the same time, it allows a general overview of Kant’s work for a broader non-scholarly audience interested in his critical philosophy and its context.

Maimon's Essay on a New Logic Or Theory of Thinking

The Essay on a New Logic or Theory of Thinking, originally published in Berlin in 1794, was Salomon Maimon's hard-won success after a lifetime's pursuit of philosophical wisdom, Timothy Franz presents its first English translation. Franz translates the entirety of the New Logic, Maimon's Letters to Aenesidemus, two hostile reviews he vigorously annotated, and his letters to Kant, Reinhold, and Fichte about the work. Franz prefaces the text with a new history of Maimon's unique philosophical development, an introduction that discusses Maimon's relation to Kant, and a commentary that reconciles Maimon's idiosyncratically disjointed style with his unified vision of a systematic philosophy of reflection. This makes Maimon's work available for further study.

The volume Thinking, Knowing, Acting: Epistemology and Ethics in Plato and Ancient Platonism aims to offer a fresh perspective on the correlation between epistemology and ethics, a topic of central importance in the Platonic tradition which has not yet received the attention it deserves. The first part deals with the social, juridical premises of Plato’s philosophy, with particular regard to the relation between science and practical reason. The second part investigates the reception and development of these problems in Aristotle and the Platonic tradition. Other papers, on Solon and Galen, show that the conflict between knowledge and political action was also a central topic for the other Greek thinkers and contribute by contrast to a better evaluation of the originality of Platonism.

European scholars discuss Leo Strauss as a major figure in the history of philosophy. This volume presents, for the first time in English, the approaches to Leo Strauss being pursued by European scholars in Spain, Italy, and Germany. Whereas the traditions of Strauss interpretation have, until recently, focused on issues of interest to political science and, to a lesser extent, religious studies, this collection makes a powerful contribution to the recent philosophical consideration of Strauss. Each essay treats a unique thread emerging from the tapestry of Straussian thought, illustrating Strauss’s thinking on the reading of ancient texts and on the relationship between philosophy and politics. In doing so, Strauss is placed squarely and uncompromisingly within the history of philosophy, in conversation with a large range of philosophical figures. “This is a really wonderful volume, a compelling narrative of Strauss as a reader of philosophical texts who both originated a new way of philosophical exploration as well as freely responded to philosophical and historical circumstances of his time.” — Jeffrey A. Bernstein, College of Holy Cross

Pubblicità, educazione e diritto in Kant

Pubblicità, educazione e diritto in Kant

In contrast to modern theories of justice, Plato, Aristotle and Cicero conceive of justice not only as a political constitution, but also as an individual person's state of soul. This twofold perspective is a fascinating feature of Ancient political philosophy. This volume provides comprehensive and detailed examinations of Plato's, Aristotle's, and Cicero's theories of justice.
