This is a summary of the Girl's Own Paper which was a British story paper catering for girls and young women, published from 1880 until 1956.The G.O.P provided a mix of stories and educational and improving articles, with 'Answers to Corespondents' and occasional coloured plates, poetry and music. From 1908 the weekly magazines were dropped and the paper included more information on serious careers for girls and advice on style and dress. Nearly forgotten to time "The Girl's Own Paper, Vol. XX. No. 1009, April 29, 1899" is a seminal piece of women's literature. A periodical written for women, by women, it can almost be considered a precursor for the modern women's magazine or book. The text contained stories on a variety of interests for women during its time. From society to family life. While some modern readers may find the articles to be "tame" by the standards of those you can find today, "The Girl's Own Paper" walked so modern works can run.

Selections from The Girl’s Own Paper, 1880-1907

The Girl’s Own Paper, founded in 1880, both shaped and reflected tensions between traditional domestic ideologies of the period and New Woman values in the context of the figure of the New Girl. These selections from the journal demonstrate the efforts of its publisher (the Religious Tract Society) to combat the negative moral influence of sensational popular literature while at the same time addressing the desires of its audience for exciting reading material and information about topics mothers could not or would not discuss. Selected fiction gives a rich sense of the conventions and the domestic ideology of the time; the nonfiction prose ranges from essays on conduct and household management to articles on new opportunities in education and work.
