The ‘open society’ has become a watchword of liberal democracy and the market system in the modern globalized world. Openness stands for individual opportunity and collective reason, as well as bottom-up empowerment and top-down transparency. It has become a cherished value, despite its vagueness and the connotation of vulnerability that surrounds it. Scandinavia has long considered itself a model of openness, citing traditions of freedom of information and inclusive policy making. This collection of essays traces the conceptual origins, development, and diverse challenges of openness in the Nordic countries and Austria. It examines some of the many paradoxes that openness encounters and...

Leading scholars in the field of corruption analysis shed light on the issue of corruption from different theoretical perspectives. This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2013. In the nineteen essays of this collection, the 21st century citizen is introduced, deconstructed, probed and admired among the messy realities of the contemporary world. As an inter-disciplinary project, the collection draws on expertise from across Europe, North America and Australasia to offer new insights into such diverse existences as the environmental citizen, the young citizen, the multiple citizen, the non-citizen, and the global citizen. It unflinchingly spotlights the failures of our contemporary societies to resolve the endless, universal problems of conflict, poverty and oppression. It also opens windows of hope onto a range of new understandings and innovative approaches to the challenges we face, from the mass movements of refugees to the digitalisation of social contact. This material can be read as a whole, as a conceptual collection, or it can be dipped in to and out of between work and leisure. Whether it is read as research or pastime, this volume will challenge and confront, comfort and renew, the many ways of thinking about citizenship in the 21st century.

Life Stories and Sociological Imagination

What happens when public figures’ private selves are put forth for examination by public audiences? How do the personal struggles of music artists, specifically those with immigrant backgrounds, compare to the private struggles of other individuals? At a time when many countries in the European Union are experiencing an increase in far-right political party activities, how do individuals from the margins negotiate new ways of thinking about identity, offering hope for a greater understanding of shared struggles across societies? This book offers interpretations of identity and belonging by examining the work of two music artists, Faudel Belloua from France and Adam Tensta from Sweden. By analyzing texts produced by these individuals, the author argues that ongoing engagement with the materials produced by Belloua and Tensta, a process which she refers to as living biography, presents a unique window into the process of how Belloua and Tensta connect personal struggles to public issues, providing a compelling departure point for further discussions on how interpretations of national identity are changing in France, Sweden and beyond.

Nationalism in Contemporary Europe

This book proposes a conceptualisation of nationalism with a multilevel operational character. It offers three different perspectives on nationalism that consider both the discursive structure and the discursive agency of nationalism. It also demonstrates a number of intra-phenomenal and extra-phenomenal constraints on nationalism. This book underlines that nationalism in contemporary Europe should not be regarded in terms of methodological homogeneity and conceptual uniformity, ideological rigidity or strategic consistency but rather as a contested, segmented, bounded and contextual phenomenon. Andrzej Marcin Suszycki is adjunct professor (Privatdozent) at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences of the University of Potsdam.

For a long time analyses of political parties were framed within the usual context of democracy and of the historical transformation of the forms of democratic government. More recently several authors, among which eminently Peter Mair, progressively began to question the relationship between the normative definition of democratic government and the actual operation of parties. These new concerns are well epitomized by the tension between ‘responsiveness’ and ‘responsibility’ that gives the title to this book. While classic democratic theory sees as desirable that parties in government (and in opposition, too) are sympathetically responsive to their supporters first and more generall...
