Rubens and the Dominican Church in Antwerp
This book is about the Dominican church in Antwerp (today St Paul’s). It is structured around three works of art, made or procured by Peter Paul Rubens: the Fifteen Mysteries of the Rosary cycle (in situ), Caravaggio’s Rosary Madonna (Vienna) and the Wrath of Christ high altarpiece (Lyon). Within the artist’s lifetime, the church and monastery were completely rebuilt, creating one of the most spectacular sacred spaces in Northern Europe. In this richly illustrated book, Adam Sammut reconceptualises early modern churches as theatres of political economy, advancing an original approach to cultural production in a time of war. Using methodologies at the cutting edge of the humanities, the place of St Paul’s is restored to the crux of Antwerp’s commercial, civic and religious life.

Women, Aging, and Art
What images come to mind with the words “women”, “aging”, “old”, even “elderly”? Are they stereotypes? Are there any positive associations? The thirteen contributions to this edited volume explore a broad range of images of old women, ranging from medieval “old wives” to contemporary re-imaginations of shamans and witches and empowering self-portraits. Works from medieval Europe to colonialtime Polynesia, present West Africa, Japan, and the Americas, in a multiplicity of media are explored in detail. Tiere erzählen
Diese Ausgabe von Tierstudien steht unter dem Motto "Tiere erzählen". Tieren wird traditionell der Logos (Sprache, Rationalität) abgesprochen. Was passiert, wenn Tiere Sprache erhalten und sie nicht nur Laute produzieren? Inwiefern wird dadurch die Speziesgrenze neu perspektiviert? Werden Tiere notwendig anthropomorphisiert, wenn ihnen eine (eigene) Stimme verliehen wird, mit der sie ihre Geschichten erzählen können? U.a. diesen Fragen widmen sich die Aufsätze zu erzählenden Tieren in medialen, naturgeschichtlichen und literarisch-philosophischen Kontexten. Die Analysen leisten eine Relektüre von bekannten ikonischen Tieren wie dem weißen Hai, dem gestiefelten Kater oder dem bösen Wolf. Es wird deutlich, dass die Semiotik und Sprache der Tiere immer auch eine politische Dimension besitzen, die besonders im Hinblick auf vom Krieg traumatisierte Hunde oder in der Klage geschlachteter Schweine über Tiertransporte manifest wird. Die drei Bildstrecken beschäftigen sich mit dem Erzählen von Tieren und für Tiere in der Kunst: in der Autobiographie ausgestopfter Tiere, dem Lesen von Ameisenspuren und der Neuerzählung des Gilgamesch-Epos für Affen.
Geschichte der Philologien
"Geschichte der Philologien" (bis 2019 "Geschichte der Germanistik") wurde 1991 von Christoph König als Organ germanistischer Wissenschaftsgeschichtsforschung gegründet. Aus der Beobachtung anderer, benachbarter Philologien wurde allmählich eine Komparatistik der Fächer, im Sinn des historischen Vergleichs und der philosophischen Reflexion. Das internationale Editorial Board begleitet aktiv den Weg: Dort sind die verschiedenen Fächer (Arabistik, Sinologie, Sanskritforschung, Klassische Philologie, Germanistik) durch namhafte Gelehrte vertreten. Die Aufsätze erscheinen in den drei Sprachen Deutsch, Englisch und Französisch. Neben Forschungsbeiträgen zu den einzelnen Philologien werden Inedita präsentiert, Neuerwerbungen in Literatur- und Universitätsarchiven vorgestellt und Forschungsprojekte skizziert. Jedes Doppelheft enthält eine ausführliche, kommentierte Bibliographie der Neuerscheinungen in den verschiedensten Fächern. Mit Beiträgen u. a. von: Norbert Groeben, Christoph König, Andreas Mayer, Hans-Harald Müller, Christoph Strosetzki sowie einer Kommentierten Fachbibliographie 2021-2022.
