Glass fibres are melt-spun, silica-based inorganic materials. Their main application is in glass fibre-reinforced composites, which account for more than 90% of all fibre-reinforced composites currently produced. Nevertheless, improvement of the key properties of composites remains challenging. The objective of this reprint is to focus on actual research topics related to glass fibres comprising multifunctional nanostructured surfaces, e.g., graphene, which can lead to electrically conductive fibres and their interphases in composites that are capable of uptake under a variety of mechanical, chemical, humidity, and thermal conditions for in situ sensing functions. Sizing of glass fibres help...

Fiberglass and Glass Technology

Fiberglass and Glass Technology: Energy-Friendly Compositions and Applications provides a detailed overview of fiber, float and container glass technology with special emphasis on energy- and environmentally-friendly compositions, applications and manufacturing practices which have recently become available and continue to emerge. Energy-friendly compositions are variants of incumbent fiberglass and glass compositions that are obtained by the reformulation of incumbent compositions to reduce the viscosity and thereby the energy demand. Environmentally-friendly compositions are variants of incumbent fiber, float and container glass compositions that are obtained by the reformulation of incumb...

Handbook of Composite Reinforcements

This comprehensive single volume handbook covers every aspect of reinforcement science, from hands-on subjects, such as manual 'lay-up' processing, to theoretical discussions concerning rheology and modeling. Taken from the recently published six volume International Encyclopedia of Composites, this reference volume offers scholarly and practical knowledge of distinguished industry-experts, academics, and government researchers in one accessible and informative handbook. Fibers, processes, and composite reinforcement types, as well as relevant miscellaneous subjects such as property relationships, manufacturing, hybrid reinforcements, and modeling are given detailed treatment. Engineers, materials scientists, and technologists will find the Composite Reinforcement Handbook an invaluable tool.

Present rocket motor cases are being made with Type E commercial glass fibers because of the relative ease of manufacture, high resistance to weathering, strength and low cost. Processing improvements are considered the best immediate means to physical improvements. Some improvement in the modulus of elasticity of Type E glass is possible by modified and improved manufacturing processes, but this may be accompanied by a loss in strength. Significant improvement in the modulus will create new problems in the glass bonding with plastics. The most effective additive for improving the glass modulus is BeO. Continuous filament glass fiber of this type is available, but expensive and difficult to manufacture. While increased modulus of elasticity is needed in fiber glass, only a fraction of this increase can be realized in the bulk modulus of the structures made from the fibers.
