A page-turning young-adult novel told from the alternating voices of two witty, sharp-edged teenage girls who compete for a role in the school production of Hamlet and for the same local bad boy, in a game of deception, betrayal, and sword play. When fifteen-year-old Julia Epstein and her Anglophone family flee Montreal in October 1970, she struggles to adjust to a new life in the suburban wasteland of North York, Toronto. Next door lives Carla Cabrielli, who works her "assets" and knows how to get what she wants. Julia and Carla get on a collision course, not only for the same role in the school production of Hamlet, but also for the leading man - sword-wielding bad boy and sex magnet, Ian Slater. Heartache and Other Natural Shocks explores teen rivalry. When events take a dangerous turn, both Julia and Carla become vulnerable to deception and betrayal. Full of unexpected twist and turns, Glenda Leznoff's unique novel marks the debut of an important new voice in young-adult fiction.

The queen of high school meets a bad boy wrapped in a mystery, in this darkly gripping teen romance. Scarlet Tucker is the queen of high school. At Royal Eastwood High, money determines social status - and if Scarlet's family have one thing, it's money. She hangs out with the popular crowd and is dating Jack, star quarterback and heartthrob. But behind the scenes, things are a little different. Scarlet loves studying, which her classmates would think is lame. She works as a mechanic in her spare time, because she wants to earn her own money. And she doesn't think much of Jack's incessant bullying of Elijah Black, the school outcast. When a chance encounter between Scarlet and Elijah sets sparks flying, the two unlikely classmates discover they have a lot more in common than they thought. But sparks can catch fire, and some secrets are better left buried. Who will be caught in the destruction? A young adult romance perfect for fans of Riverdale and Pretty Little Liars.

Literary Nonfiction. Women's Studies. In this collection, the authors illuminate the struggles and the successes encountered in the research partnership process. The authors come from a variety of disciplines, are at various stages of their academic careers, may or may not be part of the academy, adopt a variety of feminist lenses, have a range of research partners, and focus on a range of research topics. However, in keeping with feminist research that highlights "putting the self back into science," all chapters share a focus on reflexivity, and in particular explore the impact of the research partnership process on the researcher. This "corridor talk," often inaccessible and considered unimportant, is put at the centre of this feminist collection. Insights and lessons learned are shared, unsolved dilemmas are presented, and recommendations are made.

Vancouver's New Play Centre led the way in developing and producing the work of playwrights from Western Canada for the emergent Canadian theatre in the 1970s. The New Play Centre has been a major force in Canadian cultural life for two decades; it retains its dual role as playwrighting workshop and production company and remains an important facility for dramatists to reach national and international audiences. To mark the New Play Centre's twentieth year, Talonbooks presents a collection of eight of the finest plays produced by the company from 1975 to 1989: Herringboneby Tom Cone; Ned and Jackby Sheldon Rosen; Something Redby Tom Walmsley; Dreaming and Duellingby John Lazarus and Joa Lazarus; War Babiesby Margaret Hollingsworth; Under the Skinby Betty Lambert; The Idlerby Ian Weir; and The Wolf Withinby Alex Brown. All of these plays have been produced throughout Canada, and often abroad, and remain in active production today. Each script appears in its most current form, with the playwright's latest revisions, along with biographical and production data and photos.
