On the first night of the Haunted Corn Maze, Catherine Jewell is going through it with her brother when the body of a teacher dressed as a vampire is found. Catherine's friend Maggie found his body when she was checking on her students stationed at different spots as witches, zombies or vampires. The teacher was disliked by many, and since Maggie got blood on her witches outfit when she checked to see if he was dead, she becomes a suspect. Although the police chief, John MacDougal wants her to stay away from the investigation, Catherine knows her friend isn't a murder so she still tries to find clues to find the murderer. Many others were there in costumes that night so it's not easy to narrow the suspect list down, and not all the suspects were there, and could have parked elsewhere and walked in that night. Extra suspense occurs when Hanna and Teddy, the nine year old Davis twins, find the entrance to a tunnel that was once part of the Underground Railroad and discover a skeleton.
