The Hofner Guitar

This book celebrates the glory years of Hofner, the company made famous by the Beatles' bassist Paul McCartney's use of their left-handed 1962 500/1 model. Beautifully illustrated in colour and black and white, the volume is packed with detailed information about classic Hofner guitars as well as interviews with Paul McCartney, David Gilmour, Ritchie Blackmore (of Deep Purple), Albert Lee, and others. The famous 'Memorabilia' chapter includes crisp reproductions of pages from the vintage Selmer catalogs (the UK's Hofner distributors and makers of high-quality guitar/bass amps and other instruments through 1993); a guide to dating Hofner guitars; and a wonderfully insightful interview with Christian Benker, the company's former managing director.

Total Giltrap

'Exploit your limitations' was the most profound advice ever given by the great jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery. 'tOTAL GILTRAP' is a prime example of this. Indeed, Giltrap himself is a living example of an artist who has exploited his limited, right hand pick and little finger technique to its nth degree. In this volume, we explore open tunings, legato technique, two-handed tapping and the harp-like technique of open strings and harmonics. This is all wrapped up in a very English approach to melody and invention. All the techniques and pieces in the book are featured on an accompanying CD. All the examples are recorded at half tempo and full tempo, making it a very easy to follow guide. 'tOTAL GILTRAP' is a snapshot of ideas ready to be 'exploited' and developed by the willing and imaginative student of the modern day acoustic guitar.

Classic Giltrap

Gordon Giltrap is of the UK's most accomplished finger-style guitarists and his instrumental compositions are highly regarded. In this collection, classical guitar master, Raymond Burley has taken some of Gordon's most attractive pieces and arranged them for the classical guitar. In these well-crafted arrangements, Raymond has taken advantage of the unique timbre and resonance of the classical guitar to explore the innate subtle nuances, and bring out the special musical character, of the pieces.

A Touch from God

A Touch From God gives a fascinating insight into the working life of one of the great orchestral arrangers, Del Newman. During his 35-year career as a back-room boy, Del has worked on albums by Paul McCartney, Rod Stewart, Elton John, 10cc, Cat Stevens, Neil Sedaka, Art Garfunkel and many more artists representing wide-ranging musical genres, who have been gifted with The Touch, from the truly humble to the egomaniacs. Del gives the reader a birds eye view of every aspect of his work as both as an orchestral arranger and conductor, sharing his personal observations about the popular music industry and its highs and lows, from musicians touring schedules, different cultural influences, studio sessions, stage shows, television advertising and technological advances to dubious management practices, stars insecurities, and dealing with confrontation and relationship difficulties. This book is a great read for anyone with an interest in the music business and the characters that populate it, from classical musicians and singer-songwriters to the people behind the scenes, all working together and using their unique talents to weave the rich tapestry of their musical endeavours.

Fado, often described as 'urban folk music', emerged from the streets of Lisbon in the mid-nineteenth century and went on to become Portugal's 'national' music during the twentieth. It is known for its strong emphasis on loss, memory and nostalgia within its song texts, which often refer to absent people and places. One of the main lyrical themes of fado is the city itself. Fado music has played a significant role in the interlacing of mythology, history, memory and regionalism in Portugal in the second half of the twentieth century. Richard Elliott considers the ways in which fado songs bear witness to the city of Lisbon, in relation to the construction and maintenance of the local. Elliott explores the ways in which fado acts as a cultural product reaffirming local identity via recourse to social memory and an imagined community, while also providing a distinctive cultural export for the dissemination of a 'remembered Portugal' on the global stage.

Think about Led Zeppelin and the image coming to mind would be of them straddling the world as the archetypal 'rock gods', defining the 1970s like no other artist did. Dig deeper though, and there's a lot more to Zeppelin than hard rock and bluster, with folk and blues strongly threading through their catalogue from the very beginning. This book digs into every Led Zeppelin track recorded during their decade-long existence before John Bonham's death brought down the curtain, by way of facts, anecdotes, analysis and a small dose of humour here and there. From the likes of 'Kashmir', 'Stairway To Heaven' and 'Whole Lotta Love' and their ilk, which have entered the public consciousness, down to the deeper cuts which only the fans will know, this book covers them all, while also taking a look into the stories behind the often ground breaking cover art, and the way the albums came to be recorded. Celebrating the triumphs and the arguable lower points, this is an alternative history of the band, told via the most important element - the music itself - which has influenced so many down the years. The history of led Zeppelin is a wild ride. This book shows you why.
