In 1992, the Falk Symposium No. 70 dealt with the topic `Immunology and Liver'. At that time basic mechanisms of immunology as well as immunopathogenetic mechanisms in viral and autoimmune liver diseases were discussed. Now, 7 years later, the Falk Symposium No. 114, held in Basel, Switzerland, October 20-21 1999 (Part I of the Basel Liver Week 1999), focused on immunology in autoimmune liver diseases. In the first section basic mechanisms of autoimmunity are presented, including the relevance of superantigens and the role of apoptosis. A further topic is the latest developments concerning animal models for autoimmune diseases. Recently the International Autoimmune Hepatitis Group newly defi...
A comprehensive guide to diseases of the immune system, listing names, symptoms, research, treatments available and more.
This book is a compilation of formal presentations made during a three-day invitational conference at Battelle Research Center in Seattle, Washington. The purpose of organizing and publishing the proceedings of the conference is to provide a comprehensive survey of present knowledge on the determinants of membrane structure, the molec ular specificity of membrane function, and the dynamic properties of membranes. Each presentation was followed by discussions which, be cause of their informal and spontaneous character, have not been in cluded in this publication. Molecular studies of biological membrane phenomena have progressed over the past decade to the point where it is now realistic to e...
Hardbound. Progress in Hepatology 4 - Liver Cirrhosis Update includes the basic and clinical research on liver cirrhosis and its treatment as presented in the 4th Tadao Takahashi Memorial Forum held in Tokyo, Japan in 1997.Liver cirrhosis is the final outcome of virtually all chronic liver diseases. The etiology differs markedly from country to country. For example, in Japan (and probably most countries of East and Southeast Asia) hepatitis B and C are the most common causes while in western countries it is alcohol. In this volume the focus is almost exclusively on those cases due to HBV and/or HCV. Articles are presented on molecular pathology; classification from a pathological perspective; imaging diagnosis; endoscopic treatment and progress in bioartificial liver support among others. The mechanism of hepatocyte injury differs between virus- and alcohol-induced chronic liver diseases. These differences produce pathological, functio
Autoimmune liver disease is defined as immune-mediated chronic liver disease of unknown etiology. The forms of autoimmune liver disease include autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis, primary sclerosing cholangitits and an overlapping syndrome known as autoimmune cholangitis. These diseases were once considered to be rare. However, incidence of these diseases has increased with advanced of diagnostic techniques. During the past ten years, we have made enormous progress in understanding autoimmune mechanisms. Furthermore, new clinical and epidemiological studies have provided information that has changed our concept of autoimmune liver disease. This symposium was indeed a success due to the quality presentations by active researchers in the world.
This volume is intended to cover advances of hepatology in Japan. Topics covered include the molecular structure and pathophysiological roles of intercellular junctions in the liver, and the molecular pathogenesis of hepatocellular carcinoma in hepatitis B virus infection.
Hardbound. This volume of Progress in Hepatology contains articles on basic and clinical research on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in Japan, focusing on its prevention and treatment. The number of patients with HCC is now increasing in Japan and HCC arises as the main cause of death in patients with liver cirrhosis in Japan. This volume addresses the trials for the prevention of HCC growth in the chronically injured liver by hepatitis viruses and deals with the epidemiology, pathology and genomic changes of HCC in Japan.
