During the past decade, it has become commonplace to interpret social and cultural reality-the very groundwork of the social sciences-as linguistic constructions. Not only is society viewed as a text, but scientific texts themselves are seen as rhetorical constructions. This collection of scholarly essays begins with an overview of this emerging field, and covers the specific stylistic practices by which social scientists create -objective- or -true- representations of society. The volume closes with a consideration of the more telling challenges to the rhetorics of the social sciences and how these might be encompassed or overcome.

The Metaphysics of World Order

In this book, Nicolas Laos studies the meaning of the terms "world" and "order," the moral dimensions of each world order model, and wider issues of meaning and interpretation generated by humanity's attempt to live in a meaningful world and to find the logos of the beings and things in the world. The aim of this book is to propose a unified theory of world order (i.e., a theory that combines philosophy, theology, and political theory). In this context, the author provides a thought-provoking (re)interpretation of classical philosophy (placing particular emphasis on Platonism), an in-depth inquiry into medieval philosophy and spirituality (placing particular emphasis on the cultural differen...

United States Government Policy and Supporting Positions

The Plum Book is published by the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs and House Committee on Oversight and Reform alternately after each Presidential election. The Plum Book is used to identify Presidential appointed and other positions within the Federal Government. The publication lists over 9,000 Federal civil service leadership and support positions in the legislative and executive branches of the Federal Government that may be subject to noncompetitive appointment. The duties of many such positions may involve advocacy of Administration policies and programs and the incumbents usually have a close and confidential working relationship with the agency head or other key officials. The Plum Book was first published in 1952 during the Eisenhower administration. When President Eisenhower took office, the Republican Party requested a list of government positions that President Eisenhower could fill. The next edition of the Plum Book appeared in 1960 and has since been published every four years, just after the Presidential election.

Judicial review--the power of the United States Supreme Court to nullify unconstitutional laws--has been attacked and celebrated. The Court's authority has become even more significant over the past century as it has grown to occupy a more central role in the lives of Americans. The result has been for politicians of both major political parties (as well as scholars) to decry the antidemocratic nature of the judicial power. This book argues that judicial review ensures the survival of the republic, outlining the Court's responsibilities as an instrument of rights theory and its history of defending the principles established during the American founding that assert the primacy of certain inherent rights. Centering on the power of judicial review, chapters detail the Court's reputation as a steward of the Constitution, protecting the rights of the people against the encroachments of the executive and legislative branches--and against the fleeting passions of the people.

Democracy and Exchange

Democracy and Exchange is about the twin pillars of the consultative order. The subject is perennially topical and interesting, both in rich countries and in less-developed countries that are developing their own institutional mix. It also provides an in-depth analysis and comparison of the political economy of five seminal theorists: Adam Smith, Richard Titmuss, T.H. Marshall, J.K. Galbraith and Joseph Schumpeter.
