Jones' comparative study of national memory cultures argues for a more nuanced view of responses to shared issues of remembrance. Focusing on the 1960s and 1970s, two decades of great change and debate in French and German discourses of memory, it investigates literary representations of the Second World War, and in particular the Holocaust, from France and both Germanies. The study encompasses thirteen works representing a variety of genres and divergent perspectives, and authors include Jorge Semprun, Peter Weiss, Georges Perec and Bernward Vesper. Addressing the underlying theme of travel as a means of exploring the past, it contrasts the journeys made by deportees and post-war visitors to the camps with the use of the journey as a literary device."

Each chapter starts with a well-known flag and shows how that flag led to a number of other flags - so, for example, how the French tricolor led to the red, white and green tricolor of Italy, and then to a host of other tricolors in different parts of the world. Many of the over 200 colour illustrations feature alternative versions of existing flags - the flags that might have been - such as the red Canadian maple leaf between two bands of blue, representing the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. This entertaining and very likeable history of flags was written by Ukrainian businessman and ex-cabinet minister Dmytro Dubilet and first published in Ukrainian six months before the start of the Ukrainian-Russian war.

Many modern playwrights have dramatized the process of theatrical creation within their plays. In doing so, they have disregarded the "do not disturb" sign on the rehearsal room door, and have opened the art of theater to a particular kind of scrutiny. This scrutiny is unusual given the long-standing tradition of secrecy that surrounds theatrical rehearsal. Viewing modern drama generally as a drama that juxtaposes authority and freedom, and viewing contemporary criticism as essentially an extended debate on the issue of meaning's closure, this study invokes the critical perspectives M. M. Bakhtin, Roland Barthes, and Bertolt Brecht to create a general theory of rehearsal practice that differentiates it from the practice of performance. Working with notions of textual authority explored in a variety of critical contexts, this volume attempts to explore the theoretical ramifications of metatheatrical representations of rehearsal.
