Spearheads for Reform

Allen Davis looks at the influence of settlement-house workers on the reform movement of the progressive era in Chicago, New York, and Boston. These workers were idealists in the way they approached the future, but they were also realists who knew how to organize and use the American political system to initiate change. They lobbied for a wide range of legislation and conducted statistical surveys that documented the need for reform. After World War I, settlement workers were replaced gradually by social workers who viewed their job as a profession, not a calling, and who did not always share the crusading zeal of their forerunners. Nevertheless, the settlement workers who were active from the 1880s to the 1920s left an important legacy: they steered public opinion and official attitudes toward the recognition that poverty was more likely caused by the social environment than by individual weakness,

Flak-Catchers

Flak-Catchers explores the ways in which riot commissions-the institutional bodies appointed by an executive in the aftermath of a race riot to determine a riot timeline, investigate causes, and offer prescriptions for change-have dealt with racial violence in the United States over the last century. In studying five American riots and their commissions this book shows that riot commissions only serve to give the appearance of strong and responsive government action during uncertain times. They primarily benefit the instituting body by focusing on a restoration of law and order while undermining any larger civil rights message.

Guide to Mutation Detection

Guide to both the theory and practice of mutation detection technology, including detailed practical protocols that are derived from courses run by the Human Genome Organization (HUGO). Guide to Mutation Detection offers the only single source for assessing the molecular biological tools for mutation analysis in order to design an experiment. The first section reviews topics such as key technologies, mutation scanning, cleavage, quality control, high throughput approaches, databases, and nomenclature. The second part covers step-by-step protocols and discussion of methods such as tag-array minisequencing, electronic hybridization, pyrosequencing, fluorescent SSCP, DHPLC, array CGH, and MADGE.
