The Graham Stuart Thomas Rose Book

This volume comprises three books by Graham Stuart Thomas that have transformed our gardens, establishing him as one of the most influential gardeners of the 20th century. The Old Shrub Roses(1955) brought to public attention the favourite roses of the early 19th century: the intensely scented Damasks, the rich and sombre Gallicas and the Albas with their unique combination of elegance and thriftiness. Shrub Roses of Today (1962) identified the species and hybrids from Japan and North America, from English and Scottish hedgerows and from the mountains of China, full of virtues then unrecognized. Climbing Roses Old and New (1965) considered ramblers and climbers such as 'Adelaide d'Orleans' and 'Desprez a fleur jaune', now more than 150 years old but still incomparable. The Graham Stuart Thomas Rose Book brings the trilogy together, substantially revised and updated. New material has been added, practical advice is included on planting, general cultivation, pruning and display, and new photographs complement favourite illustrations from such masters as Redouté and Graham Stuart Thomas himself.

With his sly little moustache, broad gap-toothed grin, garish waistcoats and ostentatious cigarette holder, Terry-Thomas was known as an absolute bounder, both onscreen and off. Graham McCann’s hugely entertaining biography celebrates the life and career of a very English rascal. Born in 1911 into an ordinary suburban family, Thomas Terry Hoar-Stevens set about transforming himself at a very early age into a dandy and a gadabout. But he did not put the finishing touches to his persona until the mid-1950s with his groundbreaking TV comedy series How Do You View?, a forerunner of The Goon Show and Monty Python. Terry-Thomas went on to carve out a long and lucrative career in America, appeari...

It was Graham Stuart Thomas who in Old Shrub Roses first brought to public attention the favourite roses of the early nineteenth century - the intensely scented damasks, the rich and sombre Gallicas, the elegant Albas. In Shrub Roses of Today he performed the same task for the species and hybrids from Japan and North America, from English and Scottish hedgerows and the mountains of China. He also brought back to popularity the roses of the late Victorian and Edwardian era, Chinas and Hybrid Musks redolent of house parties before the Great War. Climbing Roses Old and New considered ramblers of greater subtlety than today's garish and formless floribundas, and also described the author's exciting rediscovery of the old Autumn-flowering Musk Rose.
