Yavapai County Line

They were the men in Lizzie's life separated by a world turned upside down. Jamie, her younger brother, was a pilot stationed somewhere in England, her husband Frank was in the Marines and the last letter she received from L.J. was from Fort Benning but she suspected he must be in North Africa by now. L.J. had always been her confidant, the close friend that she could always count on now matter how difficult things happened to be. Kathy had always known that when she found the one person meant for her she would feel the spark between them. How was she to know that moment would arrive in the middle of a war thousands of miles from home? He was tall with angular features, blond hair, and the bluest eyes she'd ever seen. When he looked at her it seemed that all distractions faded away to be replaced by a silent exchange between them. Years would go by and she would think of the magic within that first look and wonder how real it was for them in that singular moment when her life changed forever.

Sex and Drugs and Sausage Rolls

He becomes funnier the more you read him.' Independent It has always been John Omally's secret ambition to become a rock star. In his youth he mastered air guitar and wardrobe-mirror posing, but he lacked that certain something. Talent. But at last an opportunity has arisen for John to get into 'The Industry'. A band called Gandhi's Hairdryer are looking for a manager, so all John has to do is persuade them that he is the new Brian Epstein. It should be a piece of cake. But - and there's always a but - there is something rather odd about this band. Something other-worldly. It might be the lead singer, whose voice has the power to heal. Might she be an angel, perhaps? Or could she be the Devil in disguise? Because, after all, the Devil does have all the best tunes. And this is Brentford. In this, his final offering of the twentieth century, Robert Rankin returns to the town of his birth, the friends of his youth and one of the loves of his life: Rock Music. 'Everybody should read at least one Robert Rankin in their life.' Daily Express

Some Flowers

In Some Flowers, originally published in 1937, Vita Sackville-West took the novel step of choosing 25 of her favourite flowers and describing their appearance, origins and characteristics – and the best ways to grow them – in a series of brilliantly expressive pen portraits which retain their vitality over 70 years later. In this fresh edition of the book the exquisite watercolours of Graham Rust provide a perfect marriage of words and images, clearly demonstrating at last the accuracy and ingenuity of Vita Sackville-West's descriptions. This glorious second flowering of her personal, erudite and poetical book will not only delight her many admirers but also guarantee her reputation with a new generation of gardening enthusiasts.

The Technical Development of Roads in Britain

This title was first published in 2003. The history of roads in Great Britain has not been one of steady development, but rather, one that has waxed and waned in response to social, military and economic needs, and also as to whether there have been alternative methods of transport available. Paralleling this, the technical aspects of road construction - with the one great exception of Roman roads - can be seen as a fitful progression of improvement followed by neglect as the roadmaker has responded, albeit tardily on occasion, to the needs of the road user. This text describes the technical development of British roads in relation to the needs of the time, and thereby touches upon its relation to the history of the country more generally.
