The women who grew up earlier this century expected to be wives and mothers – gardeners, cooks, churchgoers, voluntary workers, housekeepers. They brought up a generation of women, now in their fifties, who became lawyers, secretaries, teachers, businesswomen, factory workers – as well as mothers.
