White Magic and Other Poems
One of the greatest Polish poets of the 20th century, Baczynski was born in Warsaw in 1921. In the early war years he wrote copiously and studied Polish literature in the underground university, where he met Barbara Drapczynska, whom he married in 1942. The beautiful love poems he wrote to Barbara make up an important part of his writings. In 1943, he joined the Armia Krajowa (Home Army) of the Polish resistance. In August 1944, Baczynski was killed in action. His mother preserved his manuscripts and, in 1961, they were published for the first time.
Vladimir Mayakovsky
Two days before the 1913 premiere of this Futurist play in verse, the original cast withdrew because rumors started to spread across Saint Petersburg that they would be pelted with garbage and beaten by the public. In fact, the audience did throw rotten eggs, shouting at 20-year-old Vladimir Mayakovsky (who played the leading role), "Stop him immediately!... Catch him!... He is not to get away!... Make him give us back our money!" According to actor Konstantin Tomashevsky: Those were the times of turmoil, anxiety, dark forebodings. All of us instantly recognized in Mayakovsky a revolutionary, even if his hectic sermons to the human souls, mutilated by the vile city, sounded a bit muddled. It was an attempt at tearing off masks, revealing the sores of the society, sick beneath the veneer of respectability. Other theatrical events that season were barely noticed. "Who's more insane, the Futurists or the public?" the Peterburgskaya Gazeta newspaper asked.
Suites
Suites is one of the most charming and melodious of all of Lorca's poem series. Written early in his career, most of these poems remained unpublished during his lifetime and were later reassembled from notebooks. The first appearance of this work in English was in a small chapbook, entitled Suites, and in the Collected Poems of 1988; but the current edition of Selected Verse contains only a fraction of this important series. This is the first complete single-volume edition of this great work.
