Re-Imaging Modernity
This is a book about Christianity in one particular region in Kenya. It walks into churches, listens to sermons, dances to music, and interviews the people sitting in the pews, all with the aim of understanding how spiritual power enables these churches to function as agents within their contemporary society. Ecclesiastical communities in Africa draw upon divine power in order to engage in modernity-related topics. Humans are not unresponsive to global flows of meaning; they are integrative agents who fashion their world by living in it. The kind of modernity arising from these churches does not blindly follow Western forms, but flows from its own internal logic in which spiritual power occupies central hermeneutical function. Theological resources contribute to the formation of sociological expressions. Navigating Complexity in Our World
This book began, at least in seminal form, back in May 2010. I was sitting in my office at Kijabe Hospital, Kenya, when I received an email letting me know I was accepted as a new faculty member at Asbury Theological Seminary, USA. I had been teaching at a theological institution in Kenya for nearly a decade. My African seminary posted me to Kijabe hospital in order to help integrate theology within a medical curriculum. While in the West this might appear a curious union; there it made complete sense. In Africa (and elsewhere around the world) health represents a significant theological category due in large part to the larger cosmology found on the continent, with more fluid interaction between spiritual and material realities. Being healthy involves negotiating the different ways people become sick as well as how they appropriate resources within the spiritual realm for becoming healthy. Furthermore, health is not just vertical in terms of how people relate to the divine, but also horizontal innature. People are sick together; they also heal together. Working at the hospital allowed me to engage health as a rich, multifaceted theological concept.
A Theological Understanding of Power for Poverty Alleviation in the Philippines
This book calls attention to the sense of powerlessness of everyday people in the Philippines, and to the missional agency of US-based Filipino Protestants. Agents of Social Change
This book goes where no other work has gone. It refuses to conform to the conventional descriptions of the realities of widows in Africa. Thus, rather than approach the issue of widowhood from the vantage point of what society can do for widows, the book considers what widows can do for society. Christian widows in northern Nigeria are defying the restrictions assigned to their widowhood. Remarriage and property inheritance, for instance, are not central to widows’ ambitions. Widows believe that they are not passive observers within society, rather, they are agents of social change. Therefore, they are drawing from their faith in religious, social, and economic engagements towards societal transformation. Of the institutions that influence their lives, Christian institutions provide the best guide for the embodied agency of Christian widows in northern Nigeria. The theory of embodiment considers the ways Christian widows emulate the life of Jesus towards remaking society.
God at Work in the World
