The Road to Galaxy Formation
The formation of galaxies is one of the greatest puzzles in astronomy, the solution is shrouded in the depths of space and time, but has profound implications for the universe we observe today. This book discusses the beginnings of the process from cosmological observations and calculations. It examines the different theories of galaxy formation and shows where each theory either succeeds or fails in explaining what we actually observe. In addition, the book looks ahead to what we may expect to uncover about the epoch of galaxy formation from the new and upcoming generations of telescopes and technology.
Cosmological Effects of Scattering in the Intergalactic Medium
This book provides an explanation of electromagnetic scattering effects in the intergalactic medium that produce what have been misinterpreted as 'evolutionary' effects. It accounts for a variety of cosmological phenomena from spectroscopic redshifts to microwave background radiation. These have variously been attributed by the standard cosmological model to an origin in a 'big bang', 'dark matter', and mysterious 'vacuum energy'. This scattering model provides a viable stationary state alternative to the established view of the universe with predictions that more precisely match observation without ad hoc assumptions.

Even the casual reader cannot fail to notice the somewhat uneven presentation of the contributions contributians to this volume, in particular what concerns the st style. yle. A closer scrutiny will also reveal that whereas the English language is certainly the preferred vehicle for commu nication in astronomy, it is not the mother tongue of all contributors. However, while editing this volume I have felt that it would be more important to assure a speedy publication than to attempt to achieve a high degree of uniformity, which would anyhow be extremely diffi cult with more than 100 eontributing contributing authors.
