This volume provides a comprehensive and world-class review of the field of histiocytic neoplasms and hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). It reviews all the advances in the field of histiocytoses during the last ten years, particularly with regards to the genomic findings in LCH and other histiocytic neoplasms and the new suggested classification of the histiocytic disorders. Additionally, it features a state-of-the art update on the most recent treatment strategies for LCH, including the results of the last LCH-III international trial, salvage therapies such as reduced-intensity conditioning (RIC) stem cell transplant (SCT), and targeted therapies with BRAF and MEK inhibitors, as well...

Histiocytic Disorders of Children and Adults

As a comprehensive reference on all aspects of the histiocytic disorders, Histiocytic Disorders of Children and Adults stands out a seminal text on the genetics, pathophysiology and clinical management of this wide range of diseases. The chapters, written by acknowledged experts in the field, cover all aspects of hystiocytic disorders, from Langerhans cell histiocytosis and hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, to the uncommon cutaneous and extracutaneous histiocytic disorders. Views on the function of normal histiocytes in the immune system, the pathogenesis, underlying genetic defects, clinical presentation, treatment, controversies in therapy, salvage therapies and the late consequences are discussed in detail. Originally published in 2005, this book will be a valuable resource to clinicians and researchers who wish to learn more about histiocytic disorders.

Cytokine Storm Syndrome

Cytokine Storm Syndromes, including HLH and MAS, are frequently fatal disorders, particularly if not recognized early and treated during presentation. The genetics of Cytokine Storm Syndromes are being defined with many of the risk alleles giving rise to mutations in the perforin-mediated cytolytic pathway used by CD8 cytotoxic T cells and natural killer cells. These are being studied using murine models. Up to 10% of the general population may carry risk alleles for developing Cytokine Storm Syndromes, and Cytokine Storm Syndromes are being increasingly recognized around the world in pediatric and adult hospitals. A variety of infectious, rheumatic, and oncologic triggers are commonly associated with Cytokine Storm Syndromes, but understanding this disorder is critical for all researchers and physicians to ensure timely and appropriate therapy. This textbook, the first of its kind, addresses all aspects of the disorder – from genetics, pathophysiology, and ongoing research, to clinical presentations, risk factors, and treatment.

Acute Leukemias VI

For 10 years the book series Acute Leukemias has been providing updates on the rapid progress being made internationally concerning this group of diseases. The fifth volume mainly addressed experimental approaches, but the present issue presents both therapeutic and prognostic aspects of the most recent results from major multicenter clinical trials. Additional chapters report new trends in leukemia cell biology, the monitoring of minimal residual disease, and secondary leukemias, as well as new antileukemic drugs, antimicrobial strategies, and the use of cytokines. The combined efforts against acute leukemias described in this book explain the recent improvements in the outcome of patients suffering from acute leukemias.
