Empirical Studies of the Construction of Discourse
This volume assembles eleven articles addressing current concerns in discourse studies from an empirical perspective. Engaging with highly topical issues, they indicate the potential of an approach to the construction of discourse via corpus-based analysis, experimentation, or combined methodologies. The subject matters of the contributions, delivered by renowned scholars and dealing with either one or several languages, range from mechanisms through which information structure, connection and discourse organization are realized, to prosody as a determinant of hierarchy and specific functions of discourse markers, as well as innovative tools for visualizing discourse structure. The resulting volume addresses scholars working in a variety of topics, who either wish to incorporate empirical methods to their research or whose work is already empirically oriented and wish to gain insight into empirical evidence on state-of-the-art discursive phenomena.
Nuevas investigaciones lingüísticas
En este monográfico se recogen algunas de las comunicaciones que se presentaron en el XXX Congreso Internacional de la Asociación de Jóvenes Lingüistas (AJL), celebrado en el Centro Universitario CIESE-Comillas (Cantabria) los días 7, 8 y 9 de octubre de 2015. Esta edición suscitó la presencia de un gran número de asistentes, cuyas comunicaciones pusieron de manifiesto un alto nivel científico dentro de las distintas áreas temáticas de la Lingüística. Tropical Pinnipeds
Pinnipeds are a fascinating group of marine mammals that play a crucial role as apex predators and sentinels of the functioning and health of marine ecosystems. They are found in the most extreme environments from the Polar regions to the tropics. Pinnipeds are comprised of about 34 species, and of those at least 25% live permanently in tropical zones. This book reviews and updates current research on the biology, marine ecology, bio-monitoring, and conservation of tropical pinniped populations, including their behavior, anthropogenic stressors, and health. It also looks at challenges to be faced for the conservation of tropical pinnipeds, many of which are threatened species.
