Monstrous Anatomies
The book explores the significance and dissemination of 'monstrous anatomies' in British and German culture by investigating how and why scientific and literary representations and descriptions of abnormal bodies were proposed in the late Enlightenment, during the Romantic and the Victorian Age. Since the investigations of late 18th-Century natural sciences, the fascination with monstrous anatomies has proved crucial to the study of human physiology and pathology. Featuring essays by a number of scholars focusing on a wide range of literary texts from the long nineteenth century and foregrounding the most important monstrous anatomies of the time, this book intends to offer a significant contribution to the study of the representations of the abnormal body in modern culture.
Images of Traumatic Memories
By employing the lens of the most recent critical studies on intermediality, the author analyses the interaction between literature and photography in three contemporary hybrid novels ( Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs, 2011, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer, 2005, and The Dark Room by Rachel Seiffert, 2001) sharing the narration of traumatic historical events. The intermedial dimension realised by the confluence of the two media devices offers new ways to create meaning and to reflect upon the nature of collective and individual trauma, by re-enacting the distortion and the inaccessibility to the memories of those experiences. In this context, the reader emerges as an active participant in the process of fiction-making, as the act of reading becomes a renewed act of witnessing.

A Companion to the Works of Hermann Broch
Hermann Broch (1886-1951) is best known for his two major modernist works, The Sleepwalkers (3 vols., 1930-1932) and The Death of Virgil (1945), which frame a lifetime of ethical, cultural, political, and social thought. A textile manufacturer by trade, Broch entered the literary scene late in life with an experimental view of the novel that strove towards totality and vividly depicted Europe's cultural disintegration. Critical Monks
Benedictine scholars around 1700, most prominently proponents of historical criticism, have long been regarded as the spearhead of ecclesiastical learning on the brink of Enlightenment, first in France, then in Germany and other parts of Europe. Based on unpublished sources, this book is the first to contextualize this narrative in its highly complex pre-modern setting, and thus at some distance from modernist ascriptions ex posteriori. Challenged by Protestant and Catholic anti-monasticism, Benedictine scholars strove to maintain control of their intellectual tradition. They failed thoroughly, however: in the Holy Roman Empire, their success depended on an anti-Roman and nationalized reading of their research. For them, becoming part of an Enlightenment narrative meant becoming part of a cultural project of “Germany”.
Stylistics, Stylometry and Sentiment Analysis in German Studies
Can literature be investigated through quantitative methods? Can style, empathy, and prestige be measured? This study attempts to respond to these questions by providing results from a selection of case studies taken from German literature of the 19th through the 21st century, including Goethe’s “late style”, Felix Salten, and the output of contemporary writers such as Florian Meimberg’s “twitterature” and Daniel Glattauer’s e-mail novel. Altogether, this study shows how the interplay among literary theory, stylometry, stylistics, sentiment analysis, empirical studies, and archival research can offer new answers to old questions regarding German literature and provide tools to formulate new questions and novel approaches to research.

Geschichte der Philologien
"Geschichte der Philologien" (bis 2019 "Geschichte der Germanistik") wurde 1991 von Christoph König als Organ germanistischer Wissenschaftsgeschichtsforschung gegründet. Aus der Beobachtung anderer, benachbarter Philologien wurde allmählich eine Komparatistik der Fächer, im Sinn des historischen Vergleichs und der philosophischen Reflexion. Das internationale Editorial Board begleitet aktiv den Weg: Dort sind die verschiedenen Fächer (Arabistik, Sinologie, Sanskritforschung, Klassische Philologie, Germanistik) durch namhafte Gelehrte vertreten. Die Aufsätze erscheinen in den drei Sprachen Deutsch, Englisch und Französisch. Neben Forschungsbeiträgen zu den einzelnen Philologien werden Inedita präsentiert, Neuerwerbungen in Literatur- und Universitätsarchiven vorgestellt und Forschungsprojekte skizziert. Jedes Doppelheft enthält eine ausführliche, kommentierte Bibliographie der Neuerscheinungen in den verschiedensten Fächern.
