Facilitating of learning in higher education can be transformed through the use of Whole Brain® learning. Whole Brain® Learning in Higher Education argues that facilitating learning in Higher Education should undergo transformation in order to develop the full academic potential of all stakeholders following the principles of action research. Empirical data was collected from participants in a number of projects across diverse disciplines. Participants included students, academic staff, instructional designers, and professionals attending short courses at tertiary level.A number of case studies are discussed as evidence for the value of the proposed model for higher education. This title consists of seven chapters, covering: the theoretical framework, baseline study, professional development, studies in Whole Brain® application, learning material that makes a difference, multidisciplinary collaboration, and the way forward. - Defines Whole Brain® learning - Explains the rationale behind Whole Brain® learning - Demonstrates how the model can be applied in facilitating Whole Brain® learning in order to develop the full academic potential of students

Biologically Inspired Cognitive Architectures 2012

The challenge of creating a real-life computational equivalent of the human mind requires that we better understand at a computational level how natural intelligent systems develop their cognitive and learning functions. In recent years, biologically inspired cognitive architectures have emerged as a powerful new approach toward gaining this kind of understanding (here “biologically inspired” is understood broadly as “brain-mind inspired”). Still, despite impressive successes and growing interest in BICA, wide gaps separate different approaches from each other and from solutions found in biology. Modern scientific societies pursue related yet separate goals, while the mission of the ...

The sustainability of Networked Collaborative Learning (NCL) is a key topic of discussion amongst the institutions where it has been or may potentially be introduced. In order to determine the extent of NCL's sustainability, the added value university education may yield by adopting collaborative learning strategies must be quantified. In turn, an understanding of the implications NCL produces in terms of design and management is gained. After comparing NCL with other Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) approaches and discussing the possible reasons for adopting it, a multidimensional model for the sustainability of NCL is proposed. The model is characterized by four dimensions: pedagogical approaches, e-teacher professional development, instructional design models and valuation/assessment approaches. Each of these dimensions is examined on the basis of the author's direct experience gained through applying NCL to his university teaching. - Delineates a framework for NCL sustainability - Provides an instructional design model for NC - Describes an original approach to the evaluation of collaborative learning processes
