A obra reúne estudos acadêmicos, dedicados ao trabalho têxtil no Brasil (articulando trabalhadores e fábricas de tecidos), no intuito de apresentar um panorama mais abrangente da produção historiográfica sobre esse relevante setor industrial do país, particularmente no contexto pós Segunda Guerra Mundial. Ressalta-se que, desde a obra clássica do brasilianista Stanley Stein (publicada originalmente em 1957), não foi produzido um balanço mais denso sobre o trabalhado têxtil no Brasil. Desse modo, a obra busca reunir artigos de todas as regiões do país, abordando temáticas como trabalho feminino, empresariado têxtil, paternalismo industrial, formas de organização e lutas dos tecelões e processos de desindustrialização.
