Vector Measures, Integration and Related Topics

This volume contains a selection of articles on the theme "vector measures, integration and applications" together with some related topics. The articles consist of both survey style and original research papers, are written by experts in thearea and present a succinct account of recent and up-to-date knowledge. The topic is interdisciplinary by nature and involves areas such as measure and integration (scalar, vector and operator-valued), classical and harmonic analysis, operator theory, non-commutative integration, andfunctional analysis. The material is of interest to experts, young researchers and postgraduate students.

This vividly illustrated history of the International Congress of Mathematicians- a meeting of mathematicians from around the world held roughly every four years- acts as a visual history of the 25 congresses held between 1897 and 2006, as well as a story of changes in the culture of mathematics over the past century. Because the congress is an int

The International Commission on Mathematical Instruction, 1908-2008: People, Events, and Challenges in Mathematics Education

The book presents the history of ICMI trough a prosopographical approach. In other words, it pays a lot of attention to the actors of the International movement. The portraits of the members of the ICMI Central Committees (1908-1936) and ICMI Executive Committees (1952-2008), and other eminent figures in ICMI history, who have passed away in the first 100 years of its life, are the guiding thread of the volume. Each portrait includes: · Biographical information · An outline of the various contributions made by the individual in question to the study of problems pertaining to mathematics teaching/education · Primary bibliography · Secondary with particular attention to the publications co...

This book presents the proceedings of Positivity VII, held from 22-26 July 2013, in Leiden, the Netherlands. Positivity is the mathematical field concerned with ordered structures and their applications in the broadest sense of the word. A biyearly series of conferences is devoted to presenting the latest developments in this lively and growing discipline. The lectures at the conference covered a broad spectrum of topics, ranging from order-theoretic approaches to stochastic processes, positive solutions of evolution equations and positive operators on vector lattices, to order structures in the context of algebras of operators on Hilbert spaces. The contributions in the book reflect this variety and appeal to university researchers in functional analysis, operator theory, measure and integration theory and operator algebras. Positivity VII was also the Zaanen Centennial Conference to mark the 100th birth year of Adriaan Cornelis Zaanen, who held the chair of Analysis in Leiden for more than 25 years and was one of the leaders in the field during his lifetime.

Mathematical Communities in the Reconstruction After the Great War 1918–1928

This book is a consequence of the international meeting organized in Marseilles in November 2018 devoted to the aftermath of the Great War for mathematical communities. It features selected original research presented at the meeting offering a new perspective on a period, the 1920s, not extensively considered by historiography. After 1918, new countries were created, and borders of several others were modified. Territories were annexed while some countries lost entire regions. These territorial changes bear witness to the massive and varied upheavals with which European societies were confronted in the aftermath of the Great War. The reconfiguration of political Europe was accompanied by new...

Mathematical Knowledge and the Interplay of Practices

This book presents a new approach to the epistemology of mathematics by viewing mathematics as a human activity whose knowledge is intimately linked with practice. Charting an exciting new direction in the philosophy of mathematics, José Ferreirós uses the crucial idea of a continuum to provide an account of the development of mathematical knowledge that reflects the actual experience of doing math and makes sense of the perceived objectivity of mathematical results. Describing a historically oriented, agent-based philosophy of mathematics, Ferreirós shows how the mathematical tradition evolved from Euclidean geometry to the real numbers and set-theoretic structures. He argues for the nee...

The Rademacher System in Function Spaces

This book presents a systematic treatment of the Rademacher system, one of the most important unifying concepts in mathematics, and includes a number of recent important and beautiful results related to the Rademacher functions. The book discusses the relationship between the properties of the Rademacher system and geometry of some function spaces. It consists of three parts, in which this system is considered respectively in Lp-spaces, in general symmetric spaces and in certain classes of non-symmetric spaces (BMO, Paley, Cesaro, Morrey). The presentation is clear and transparent, providing all main results with detailed proofs. Moreover, literary and historical comments are given at the end of each chapter. This book will be suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in functional analysis, theory of functions and geometry of Banach spaces.

Turbulent Times in Mathematics

Despite the renown of the Fields Medals, J.C. Fields has been until now a rather obscure figure, and recovering details about his professional activities and personal life was not at all a simple task. This work is a triumph of persistence with far-flung archival and documentary sources, and provides a rich non-mathematical portrait of the man in all aspects of his life and career. Highly readable and replete with period detail, the book sheds useful light on the mathematical and scientific world of Fields' time, and is sure to remain the definitive biographical study. --Tom Archibald, Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, BC, Canada Drawing on a wide array of archival sources, Riehm and Hoffman...
