Clues for Differential Diagnosis of Neuromuscular Disorders

  • Type: Book
  • -
  • Published: 2023-09-29

  • Publisher: Springer

This book evaluates muscle and nerve biopsies. It creates a more analytical view of neuromuscular diseases in the light of clinical findings. Diseases that occur mostly in muscle or nerve tissue may show common clinical findings. Addressing these two issues together will make it easier to understand the diseases. Neuromuscular diseases, normal histology, embryology, and physiopathology of muscles and nerves are discussed with a main focus on differential diagnosis. The book also presents the most cost-effective and easiest-to-follow algorithms for the differential diagnosis of diseases.

Glucose Tolerance

The progression from normal glucose tolerance (NGT) to type 2 diabetes involves intermediate stages of impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), also known as prediabetes. The pathophysiology underlying the development of these glucose metabolic alterations is multifactorial, leading to an alteration in the balance between insulin sensitivity and insulin secretion. Our knowledge of the molecular basis of the signaling pathways mediating the various physiologic effects of insulin is steadily advancing. New substrates and signaling molecules have been identified and potential mechanisms involved in the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes have been revealed. This book summarises the current state of knowledge on the pathophysiology underlying the progression from normal glucose tolerance to type 2 diabetes and therapeutic advances in the improvement of glycaemic control in prediabetic and diabetic states.

Myocarditis

Myocarditis, the inflammation of the heart muscle, could be in some cases serious and potentially fatal disease. This book is a comprehensive compilation of studies from leading international experts on various aspects of myocarditis. The first section of the book provides a clinical perspective on the disease. It contains comprehensive reviews of the causes of myocarditis, its classification, diagnosis, and treatment. It also includes reviews of Perimyocarditis; Chagas' chronic myocarditis, and myocarditis in HIV-positive patients. The second section of the book focuses on the pathogenesis of myocarditis, discussing pathways and mechanisms activated during viral infection and host immune response during myocarditis. The third, and final, section discusses new findings in the pathogenesis that may lead to new directions for clinical diagnosis, including use of new biomarkers, and new treatments of myocarditis.

Wilms tumor is a rare kidney cancer that is usually diagnosed in children under the age of six. Wilms tumor is mostly the result of aberrations in WT1 gene, located on chromosome 11p13. In addition to being a risk factor for Wilms tumor, WT1 aberrations cause extra renal complications and other malignancies. This book brings together the basic and clinical aspects of Wilms tumor and WT1 research under three sections. Section I provides a comprehensive guide to the epidemiology, diagnostics, management, and treatment of Wilms tumor. Section II covers the biological aspects of Wims tumor and WT1. Section III focuses on the role of WT1 in cardiac development, prostate cancer, glioblastoma and minimal residual disease.
