Over 200 people attended the Symposium including academics, NGO representatives, government officials, and members of the general public It meant to give full voice to ordinary lake practitioners, i.e. those from lake communities and local governments who are closely involved with lake management issues on a daily basis. Secondly, it highlighted a series of important lake management case studies in order to draw out some key partnership principles, and thirdly, it provided a timely opportunity for participants to assess the role of lake networking organizations and consider whether a Global Alliance for Lakes is needed to ensure the long-term sustainability of the world's lake ecosystems.
