In the region known as Eastern and East-Central Europe, the framework provided by memory studies became highly valuable for understanding the overload of interpretations and conflicting perspectives on events during the twentieth century. The trauma of two world wars, the development of collective consciousness according to national and ethnic categories, stories of the trampled lands and lives of people, and resistance to the rule of authoritarian and totalitarian terrors—these trajectories left complex layers of identities to unfold. The following volume addresses the issue of identity as a pivot in studies of memory and literature. In this context, it addresses the question of cultural negotiation as it took shape between memory and literature, history and literature, and memory and history, with the help of contemporary authors and their works. The authors take the literature of countries such as Estonia, Poland, Serbia, Ukraine, and Russia as the point of departure, and explain its significance in terms of geographical, theoretical, and thematic perspectives.

Children's Book

Can children theologize without substantial requirements? Initially, the movement of child theology accentuated children’s original theological creativity. But in the last years, several authors point out that children need theological food in order to originally theologize. One of the most appropriate medium are children’s books. This volume presents the lectures of the international symposium “Children’s books: Nurture for children’s theology”. Proven experts demonstrate empirically studied strategies in order to stimulate children’s theological reasoning, be it about God, Jesus as the savior, death, the soul, Christmas and many other theological topics more. This reader presents the state of the art in theologizing with children stimulated by children’s books.

Religion in Republican Rome

Roman religion as we know it is largely the product of the middle and late republic, the period falling roughly between the victory of Rome over its Latin allies in 338 B.C.E. and the attempt of the Italian peoples in the Social War to stop Roman domination, resulting in the victory of Rome over all of Italy in 89 B.C.E. This period witnessed the expansion and elaboration of large public rituals such as the games and the triumph as well as significant changes to Roman intellectual life, including the emergence of new media like the written calendar and new genres such as law, antiquarian writing, and philosophical discourse. In Religion in Republican Rome Jörg Rüpke argues that religious c...

The Oxford Handbook of Family Policy Over the Life Course

Drawing on a multidisciplinary group of experts from many countries, this Handbook is intended to be a reference work that provides students and scholars in policy-related disciplines a wide-ranging perspective on the diverse ways that family policies respond to modern issues and trends over the life course. The Handbook is divided into two main parts. The first part offers a panoramic introduction to the setting and issues which contemporary family policies have been designed to address. The second part and main body of the volume is organized around four benchmark periods that encompass the main stages of the family life cycle and social policies that are called into play during these stages.

Cult and Ritual Abuse

This personal yet scholarly journey into the confusing and clandestine world of ritual abuse survivors sheds light on their catastrophic experiences and their efforts to heal afterward. Revised, updated, and expanded, this third edition of a classic study is one of the most authoritative and evenhanded volumes to tackle its hotly debated subject matter. Incorporating the authors' firsthand observations, the book provides historical, anthropological, and psychological context for contemporary reports of both ritual abuse and ritual crime. In addition to sharing patient vignettes and a history of cult and ritual abuse in society, the authors explore fascinating topics related to these practice...
