Brain Stimulation

Deep brain stimulation is one of the most effective treatments of Parkinson’s disease (PD). This report summarizes the state of the art as at January 2013. Stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus is the most commonly used approach. It improves the core motor symptoms better than medication in patients with advanced disease. It also improves the majority of nonmotor symptoms, such as mood, impulse control disorders, sleep, and some autonomic dysfunctions. Quality of life (QoL) is improved significantly more than with medication. Long-term data show that the treatment is effective for up to 10 years, but the late appearance of l-dopa-resistant symptoms is seemingly not influenced. Internal gl...

Abstract: Background The EARLYSTIM trial demonstrated for Parkinson's disease patients with early motor complications that deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN-DBS) and best medical treatment (BMT) was superior to BMT alone. Objective This prospective, ancillary study on EARLYSTIM compared changes in blinded speech intelligibility assessment between STN-DBS and BMT over 2 years, and secondary outcomes included non-speech oral movements (maximum phonation time [MPT], oral diadochokinesis), physician- and patient-reported assessments. Methods STN-DBS (n = 102) and BMT (n = 99) groups underwent assessments on/off medication at baseline and 24 months (in four conditions: on/off...

Recommendations for the Practice of Clinical Neurophysiology

This volume is a state-of-the-art summary of all the established techniques of clinical neurophysiology. It covers all the technical aspects and the relevant information for the application of these techniques in a clinical setting. An excellent book, there is no other comparable work available on the market. The authors are top scientists representing their respective fields in the international scientific community. Included are lucid reports on technical standards and applications of electromyography, evoked potentials, motor evoked potentials, reflex tests and tests of autonomic functions in clinical neurophysiology, and electrooculography. Setting the standards for the clinical routine and applications in neurology, psychiatry and child neurology, it should have a place on the bookshelves of physicians and technicians in clinical neurophysiology.
