This monograph presents a unique combination of structural and tectonic modelling with applied petroleum geological problems. Focussing on the Norwegian Continental Shelf and neighbouring areas, it includes discussion covering all scales - from development of sedimentary basins, to formation of fractures and joints on a microscale - and from exploration, to the exploitation of hydrocarbons. The book's coverage of structural and tectonic modelling, petroleum geology applications, and the treatment of the Norwegian Continental Shelf should make this book an invaluable resource book for advanced students of structural and tectonic modelling, teachers, and researchers; as well as for geologists and geophysicists in the petroleum industry.

Flow-Induced Vibrations

Flow-Induced Vibrations

In many plants, vibration and noise problems occur due to fluid flow, which can greatly disrupt smooth plant operations. These flow-related phenomena are called flow-induced vibration. This book explains how and why such vibrations happen and provides hints and tips on how to avoid them in future plant design. The world-leading author team doesn't assume prior knowledge of mathematical methods and provides the reader with information on the basics of modeling. The book includes several practical examples and thorough explanations of the structure, the evaluation method and the mechanisms to aid understanding of flow-induced vibrations. - Helps ensure smooth plant operations - Explains the structure, evaluation method and mechanisms - Shows how to avoid vibrations in future plant design

Vibration and Oscillation of Hydraulic Machinery

This volume is concerned with vibration-free and quiet operation of hydraulic machines. It deals with the problems caused by mechanical and hydraulic excitations in hydraulic machinery (except for transients which are treated in a separate volume). The invited authors from five continents are internationally recognized experts in their fields. The book looks at the fundamentals for analysis of fluid structure systems, structural vibration, shaft rotordynamics and system instability; noise and diagnosis are introduced with examples from practical experience.

Sedimentary Facies Analysis

This book celebrates the professional career of Harold Reading, who has played a leading role in the development of the IAS, and has been at the roots of the development of 'facies sedimentology' as an art in itself and as a major tool in the broader field of geology. This special collection of original research papers from Harold Reading's students covers the wide range of his research interests and reflects the power of facies sedimentology today. State-of-the-art research papers in the important field of facies sedimentology * a festschrift to one of the great names in sedimentology.

Hydraulic machinery such as turbines and pumps is widely used around the world. Related topics concerning design, operation and maintenance are of relevant interest. In this context, cavitation is a phenomenon to be taken into account, and this was treated in the XVIII IAHR Symposium on Hydraulic Machinery and Cavitation which took place in Valencia, Spain, 16th-19th September, 1996 and which was hosted by the Polytechnic University of Valencia. The proceedings of the Symposium have been published in two volumes. In this first volume, the papers included cover the following topics: Hydraulic Turbines, Analysis and Design Hydraulic Pumps Hydraulic Elements, Dynamic Characterization and Hydrau...

The Making of a Land

"The Making of a Land - Geology of Norway" takes the reader on a journey in geological time, from primordial times to the present day. A fantastic journey from the summits of Norway's spectacular rugged and weather-beaten mountains to the riches concealed in the sedimentary rocks on the continental shelf. This book displays the treasures of Norwegian geology for everyone to see. Norway's geological resources represent the foundation of its welfare state. During several centuries first the mining, and then the oil industries have been economic mainstays, and this will continue in the future. The book presents a description both of Norway and the planet we inhabit and depend on for our survival. It is lavishly illustrated with photographs and maps from all over the country.

Dynamics of the Norwegian Margin

Dynamics of the Norwegian Margin

The papers and research results presented here have been prepared as part of the Integrated Basin Studies project. This project had the objective of studying the lithospheric and upper crustal processes governing the formation and evolution of extensional and foreland basins and to decipher the role of tectonics, sea level and sedimentary processes in the filling of such basins. The Dynamics of the Norwegian Margin module focused on the rifted sedimentary basins of the northern North Sea and off Mid-Norway. This prolific hydrocarbon province has an extensive industry and scientific database and offers a unique opportunity to study fundamental earth processes, from failed rifting to crustal breakup and accretion of oceanic crust. A set of new models for basin formation and filling has been derived, including linking of sedimentary basin faulting to lower crustal deformation, signature and variability of syn-rift infill, correlation of mineralogy to seismic signature, nature and characteristics of volcanic margin formation and distribution of present-day stress field.
