Neo-Calvinism and Roman Catholicism
In their theological and historical interactions, neo-Calvinism and Roman Catholicism have often met in moments of conflict and co-operation. The neo-Calvinist statesman Abraham Kuyper polemicized against the Roman Catholic Church and its theology, whilst building bridges between those traditions by forging novel political coalitions across ecclesiastical boundaries. In theology, Gerrit C. Berkouwer, a neo-Calvinist critic of Roman Catholicism in the 1930s, later attended the Second Vatican Council as an appreciative Protestant observer. Telling their stories and others—including new research on lesser-known figures and neglected topics—this book presents the first scholarly volume on those dynamics of polemics and partnership.
The Law's Beginnings

Cleavages, Institutions and Competition
The study of how party systems are structured across territorial lines is a crucial research question for political scientists, whose answer is fraught with consequences for the political system and the democratic process. This book addresses this topic and raises the following questions. What has been the evolution of the vote nationalization process in Western Europe during the last fifty years? Which factors can account for the vote nationalization's variance across Western European party system? Through a macro-comparative perspective and an original empirical research, involving 230 parliamentary elections occurred in sixteen countries during the 1965-2015 period, this book provides answers to these questions. It analyses the evolution of vote nationalization in Western European party systems over the last fifty years and looks for an explanation. The result is a far-reaching understanding of the macro-constellation of factors involved in the process, including macro-sociological, institutional, and competition determinants.
The Impact of Cleavages on Swiss Voting Behaviour
This book studies the impact of cleavages on electoral choices. Based on a case study of Switzerland, it analyses how cleavages divide voters into voting blocs and how this influences Swiss voting behaviour and the Swiss party system. The first part examines the development of salient cleavages such as religion, social class, rural-urban, and language between 1971 and 2011. Behavioural changes among voters and changes in the size of social groups are explored as explanatory factors for the decline of cleavage voting. The second part proposes a contextual perspective analysis of the current impact of cleavages using both individual and contextual factors. These factors are also combined to examine interaction effects between the individual and the context. Finally, the third part analyses whether the impact of cleavages has harmonised across different contexts (Swiss cantons) over time.
Christian Democratic Parties in Europe Since the End of the Cold War
The period since the end of the Cold War has been characterised by an acceleration in the European integration process, a changing pattern of political ideologies and the emergence of new political parties and issues. This book assesses the impact of these phenomena on Christian Democratic parties in the current and future member states of the European Union and highlights some of the particularities and universalities of European Christian Democracy from a comparative and transnational perspective.
