The Last Messiah
Mesianisme adalah suatu paham yang menunggu kehadiran seorang “messiah” yang bakal menyelamatkan umat manusia dan mewujudkan keadilan bagi penduduk bumi. Perkataan “messiah” sendiri berasal dari bahasa Ibrani, “messiah”, yang merupakan padanan atau cognate perkataan Arab, al-masih. Sekalipun tidak terlalu merata, paham yang mesianistik juga ada dalam kalangan muslimin. Tentang asal-usul paham ini para sejarawan mengajukan berbagai pandangan. Namun umumnya berpendapat bahwa mesianisme dalam Islam berasal dari paham sekitar bakal turunnya Nabi Isa al-Masih dan Imam Mahdi. Imam al-Mahdi sendiri artinya, pemimpin yang mendapat hidayah atau petunjuk Ilahi. Mengenai bakal turunnya Isa al-Masih (yang dari proses pengalihannya ke bahasa Yunani kita mendengar nama Yesus Kristus dalam bahasa kita), memang banyak kaum muslim yang percaya, baik Sunni maupun Syi’i. Tetapi mengenai bakal turunnya Imam Mahdi, kepercayaan di kalangan kaum Syi’i lebih kuat dan merata daripada di kalangan kaum Sunni.
