Coming to Senses
Every culture conceives of the senses in different ways, establishing their own models and sensory hierarchies. Despite the importance of the senses in human experience, archaeology has generally neglected the sensory dimension of the material world. In response to this lacuna, the contributions to this volume incorporate all the senses in imaginative scenarios, in order to stimulate new ways of seeing and conceptualising archaeology and bring back the “self” to this science. The international character of the essays brought together here, including researchers and case studies from across the globe, provides a variety of perspectives on this topic from a number of scales of analysis. After Ethics
While books on archaeological and anthropological ethics have proliferated in recent years, few attempt to move beyond a conventional discourse on ethics to consider how a discussion of the social and political implications of archaeological practice might be conceptualized differently. The conceptual ideas about ethics posited in this volume make it of interest to readers outside of the discipline; in fact, to anyone interested in contemporary debates around the possibilities and limitations of a discourse on ethics. The authors in this volume set out to do three things. The first is to track the historical development of a discussion around ethics, in tandem with the development and “disciplining” of archaeology. The second is to examine the meanings, consequences and efficacies of a discourse on ethics in contemporary worlds of practice in archaeology. The third is to push beyond the language of ethics to consider other ways of framing a set of concerns around rights, accountabilities and meanings in relation to practitioners, descendent and affected communities, sites, material cultures, the ancestors and so on.
Bridging the Divide
The collected essays in this volume address contemporary issues regarding the relationship between Indigenous groups and archaeologists, including the challenges of dialogue, colonialism, the difficulties of working within legislative and institutional frameworks, and NAGPRA and similar legislation. The disciplines of archaeology and cultural heritage management are international in scope and many countries continue to experience the impact of colonialism. In response to these common experiences, both archaeology and indigenous political movements involve international networks through which information quickly moves around the globe. This volume reflects these dynamic dialectics between the past and the present and between the international and the local, demonstrating that archaeology is a historical science always linked to contemporary cultural concerns.

Desde un mero punto de vista epistemológico sería abordar la simultanedidad como apertura al conocimiento, traspasar los umbrales divisorios de la ciencia colonial, conectar lo que la disciplina ha separado y fluir aquello que ha sido estancado. La arqueología es una herramienta fundamental del conocimiento contrahegemónico. Pero, al mismo tiempo, y dado que las relaciones evestigiales son simultáneas, estratificadas y constitutivas tanto del mundo como de nuestra relación en el mundo, el otro lado del vestigio importa mucho más que una apertura al conocimiento.
