Imam al-Nawawi's 40 Hadith have come to be known as the most comprehensive, and holistic, compilation/collection of hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (saw) that convey the essence of Islam.Imam al-Nawawi's collection of 40 Hadiths is one of the most important collections of hadiths we have today. He actually compiled a total of 42 hadiths for this collection, not 40. Allah (swt) granted him blessing and success in his work so that he could make great contributions to Islam before passing away at a relatively young age.The Imam was a scholar in many different disciplines of Islamic studies. The vastness of his works in these different areas is so great that if an individual decides to study fiqh, hadith, spirituality, or Quran; one would need to pass through Imam al- Nawawi. Along with the 40 Hadiths, he authored Riyad al-Saliheen, Al-Adhkar, and commentary of Sahih Muslim and Sahih Bukhari.
Contrary to popular opinion, the bulk of Islamic law does not come from the Quran but from hadith, first-hand reports of the Prophet Muhammad’s words and deeds, passed from generation to generation. However, with varying accounts often only committed to paper a century after the death of Muhammad, Islamic scholars, past and present, have been faced with complex questions of historical authenticity. In this wide-ranging introduction, Jonathan A. C. Brown explores the collection and criticism of hadith, and the controversy surrounding its role in modern Islam. This edition, revised and updated with additional case studies and attention to the very latest scholarship, also features a new chapter on how hadiths have been used politically, both historically and in the Arab Spring and its aftermath. Informative and accessible, it is perfectly suited to students, scholars and general readers interested in this critical element of Islam.
Providing a concise overview of 40 Hadiths?sayings of the prophet Muhammad?this compilation offers an in-depth investigation of the second essential source of Islamic authority after the Qur?an. Following the prophet?s encouraged tradition of focusing on a select 40 of the proverbs instead of the entire collection, this volume consists of the original Arabic text, English translations, and informative commentary. Compiled from the works of prominent Muslim scholar Fethullah Glen, this study provides a clear portrait of how the prophet Muhammad established the principles of Islamic life through his teachings.

"The Prophetic traditions of Islam, which are commonly referred to as the hadiths (literally: 'reports'), preserve the sum and substance of the utterances, deeds, directives, and descriptive anecdotes connected with the life of the Prophet Muhammad and his Companions. Together with the Qur'an, the hadiths provide the religion of Islam with its principal scriptural sources. The collection features an accessible and informative introduction which presents an outline of the significance of the hadiths within the religious tradition while also reviewing classical scholarship devoted to the literature of the traditions; moreover, the introduction decisively sets into context the academic debates ...
Although scholars have long studied how Muslims authenticated and transmitted Muhammad’s sayings and practices (hadith), the story of how they interpreted and reinterpreted the meanings of hadith over the past millennium has yet to be told. Joel Blecher takes up this charge, illuminating the rich social and intellectual history of hadith commentary at three critical moments and locales: classical Andalusia, medieval Egypt, and modern India. Weaving together tales of public debates, high court rivalries, and colonial politics with analyses of ethnographic field notes and fine-grained arguments adorning the margins of manuscripts, Said the Prophet of God offers new avenues for the study of religion, history, anthropology, and law.
The collection of Forty Hadith by Imam Nawawi has been recognized, accepted, and appreciated by Muslim scholars for the last seven centuries. Its significance lay in the fact that these selected forty Hadith comprise the main essential and fundamental concepts of Islam. And these are the unique Hadith which are the minimum level of knowledge required for every Muslim. Various principles are contained therein such as belief, Muslim ethics, and Fiqh, etc. Thus, it is very important to have a good understanding of these Hadith based on scholarly interpretations. This book provides a simple and practical commentary on the Hadith of Imam Nawawi's collection. It is hoped that this commentary will lead the Muslim to better understand and practice the Hadith in his or her life.
Revised Second EditionThe book before you (noble reader) is a detailed explanation of the famous hadith of Jibril, at the end of which, the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: "This was Jibril, he came to you in order to teach you your Religion." Due to the many benefits contained within this book, the Muhaddith of al-Madinah, Shaykh Abdul-Muhsin al-Abbad (may Allah preserve him) decided to write a book dedicated solely to the treasures found in this hadith. The Scholars of the past have mentioned the comprehensive nature of this hadith in various places:So al-Qadi Iyad (d.544H) said: "Indeed, this hadith comprises an explanation of al the acts of worship, the outward ones and the inward ones, from the tenets of Iman, the actions of the limbs and the sincerity of the souls and it cautions against the harmful actions; to the extent that all of the Shariah sciences refer back to it and branch out from it."And al-Qurtubi (d.671H) said: "This hadith deserves to be called Ummus-Sunnah (mother of the Sunnah), due to what it contains from comprehensive knowledge of the Sunnah."
