Translation Practice in the Field
This volume presents recent research that follows translators, interpreters and translation project managers into their various work contexts and environments. It extends the scope of analysis of translation research from individuals and texts to collectives in their social and material worlds. Particular attention is paid to current translation and interpreting practice, the genesis of translations, the handling and completion of translation projects in real workplaces and the factors that shape these translation/interpreting situations. Covering fields as diverse as technical and literary translation, transcreation and church interpreting, the chapters show just how varied translation and interpreting processes and workplaces can prove to be. They provide new insights into the effects of the increasing use of technology in the translation workplace and the manifold requirements placed on translators and interpreters in a heterogeneous and fast-changing field of practice. Claims, Changes and Challenges in Translation Studies
The volume contains a selection of papers, both theoretical and empirical, from the European Society for Translation Studies (EST) Congress held in Copenhagen in September 2001. The EST Congresses, held every three years in a different country, reflect current ideas, theories and studies covering the whole range of "Translation", both oral and written, and the papers collected here, authored by both experienced and young translation scholars, provide an up-to-date picture of some concerns in the field. Knowledge Management in Electronic Government
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 5th IFIP International Working Conference on Knowledge Management in Electronic Government, KMGov 2004, held in Krems, Austria in May 2004. The 34 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected for publication. Auflage schließt die Ergebnisse einer Follow-up-Studie zur Untersuchung der Vorauflage ein. Sie zeigt, dass die Arbeit im Bereich des Übersetzens immer stärker technologisch unterstützt und im globalen Netzwerk durchgeführt wird. Übersetzungen entstehen heute in Interaktion mit spezifischen Software-Tools und in Kooperation mit internationalen Expertinnen und Experten.
Why Translation Studies Matters
Whether Translation Studies really matters is an important and challenging question which practitioners of translation and interpreting raise repeatedly. TS scholars, many of whom are translators and interpreters themselves, are not indifferent to it either. The twenty papers of this thematic volume, contributed by authors from various parts of Europe, from Brazil and from Israel, address it in a positive spirit. Some do so through direct critical reflection and analysis, arguing in particular that the engagement of TS with society should be strengthened so that the latter could benefit more from the former. Others illustrate the relevance and contribution of TS to society and to other disciplines from various angles. Topics broached include the cultural mediation role of translators, issues in literary translation, knowledge as intellectual capital, globalization through English and risks associated with it, bridging languages, mass media, corpora, training, the use of modern technology, interdisciplinarity with psycholinguistics and neurophysiology.
