Valency over Time

Valency patterns and valency orientation have been frequent topics of research under different perspectives, often poorly connected. Diachronic studies on these topics is even less systematic than synchronic ones. The papers in this book bring together two strands of research on valency, i.e. the description of valency patterns as worked out in the Leipzig Valency Classes Project (ValPaL), and the assessment of a language's basic valency and its possible orientation. Notably, the ValPaL does not provide diachronic information concerning the valency patterns investigated: one of the aims of the book is to supplement the available data with data from historical stages of languages, in order to make it profitably exploitable for diachronic research. In addition, new research on the diachrony of basic valency and valency alternations can deepen our understanding of mechanisms of language change and of the propensity of languages or language families to exploit different constructional patterns related to transitivity.

A productive and highly important branch of Nevari literature is poetry. The songs reflect the thought of the Nevars, their way of life, religious belief, their history and folklore. The greatest possible variety of genres and styles have been included in the present anthology. Most of the songs included, religious hymns as well as folksongs and ballads, are still very popular among Nevars. In order to facilitate reading and consultation, the whole corpus of the songs collected has been grouped into four principle sections, namely Religious Poetry, Songs about Love and Marriage, Epic Poetry, Didactic and Enigmatic Verses. The book contains two appendices. While the first lists the talas and ...

The Cambridge History of China: Volume 2, The Six Dynasties, 220-589

The Six Dynasties Period (220-589 CE) is one of the most complex in Chinese history. Written by leading scholars from across the globe, the essays in this volume cover nearly every aspect of the period, including politics, foreign relations, warfare, agriculture, gender, art, philosophy, material culture, local society, and music. While acknowledging the era's political chaos, these essays indicate that this was a transformative period when Chinese culture was significantly changed and enriched by foreign peoples and ideas. It was also a time when history and literature became recognized as independent subjects and religion was transformed by the domestication of Buddhism and the formation of organized Daoism. Many of the trends that shaped the rest of imperial China's history have their origins in this era, such as the commercial vibrancy of southern China, the separation of history and literature from classical studies, and the growing importance of women in politics and religion.

Nanomedicine

A meeting report of the 2nd international Else Kr ner-Fresenius Symposium on Nanomedicine Nanomedicine -- the application of nanotechnology to human health -- is a promising field of research at the interface of physical, chemical, biological, and medical science. Recent advances have made it possible to analyze biological systems at cellular and subcellular levels, offering numerous promising approaches to improve medical diagnosis and therapy. It is expected that nanomedicine will have a great impact especially on drug delivery and imaging. In this context, the development of targeted, highly specific nanoparticles is of pivotal importance. The results of these advances will offer personal...
