The Paradox of Grammatical Change
Recent years have seen intense debates between formal (generative) and functional linguists, particularly with respect to the relation between grammar and usage. This debate is directly relevant to diachronic linguistics, where one and the same phenomenon of language change can be explained from various theoretical perspectives. In this, a close look at the divergent and/or convergent evolution of a richly documented language family such as Romance promises to be useful. The basic problem for any approach to language change is what Eugenio Coseriu has termed the paradox of change: if synchronically, languages can be viewed as perfectly running systems, then there is no reason why they should change in the first place. And yet, as everyone knows, languages are changing constantly. In nine case studies, a number of renowned scholars of Romance linguistics address the explanation of grammatical change either within a broadly generative or a functional framework.
Canvi lingüístic, estandardització i identitat en català / Linguistic Change, Standardization and Identity in Catalan
The multiplicity of parallel identities that make up our personalities is a phenomenon in which our individual identitary choices merge with diverse collective identities. The present volume is a contribution to the field of Identity Studies, but from a clearly linguistic perspective. It unites several contributions which analyze discourses centered on national or regional identities – as for instance the Catalanity of the frontier city of Lleida, the connection between the natural environment and the conceptualization of deictic space, or the dialectics between center and periphery. Other chapters try to shed light on problems arising from the particular situation of Catalan as a non-state language. The contributions thus range from aspects of Cultural Studies on identities and their constituting discourses to Catalan linguistics and sociolinguistics.
Constructions in Spanish
Constructions in Spanish is the first book-length English-language volume in the field of usage-based and Cognitive Construction Grammar dedicated exclusively to Spanish. The contributions investigate a wide range of constructions from both a synchronic and a diachronic perspective, cutting across morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics. The constructionist perspective is also linked to comparative and typological research, to language learning and teaching and to multi-modal discourse analysis. The volume aims both at increasing the visibility of constructionist approaches to Spanish, and at offering data and analyses of Spanish for scholars working on constructional analyses of other languages. The volume thus addresses both scholars in Spanish and Romance linguistics, as it builds connections between more traditional approaches and constructionist approaches, and construction grammarians generally, especially scholars interested in comparative work.

While interpreting long remained unaffected by the technological progress that transformed the translation industry, recent years have witnessed a paradigm shift, such that interpreters increasingly interact with technological tools, that the delivery of interpreting services becomes increasingly dependent on technologies, and, finally, that technologies start to emerge that might some day compete with interpreters. This volume brings together a series of contributions on interpreting technologies focusing on each of these aspects. Its goal is to inform and to empower interpreters, as well as to spark new reflections on the future of technology in the interpreting industry. With this volume, we want to encourage interpreters to participate in that reflection and to become partners of technology rather than its victims. This study investigates the properties of a set of Italian adverbs (among others: pure ‘also’, solo ‘only’, un po’ ‘a bit’) that, in specific contexts of use, modify the speech acts in which they appear. On the one hand, these elements specify the way in which a speech act should be interpreted with reference to the specific interactional context, modifying its illocutionary force. On the other hand, they index presupposed/inferred meanings active in the common ground of the interaction, integrating the speech act in the common ground.
