Handbook of Foreign Language Communication and Learning

The Handbooks of Applied Linguistics series is based on an understanding of Applied Linguistics as an inter- and transdisciplinary field of academic enquiry. Applied Linguistics deals with the theoretical and empirical investigation of real-world problems in which language and communication are a central issue. The Handbooks of Applied Linguistics provide a state-of-the-art description of established and emerging areas of Applied Linguistics. Each volume gives an overview of the field, identifies most important traditions and their findings, identifies the gaps in current research, and gives perspectives for future directions.

Host Nation Studies

Elementary and middle schools for children of most US military personnel provide an exceptional curricular component: A subject called Host Nation Studies is integrated in the daily schedule, teaching American children the culture and language of their current host country. The subject is unique for its early implementation as soon as 1946 when the fi rst US schools opened in Germany. And still today, native teachers provide cultural and intercultural opportunities to US elementary students all over the world. This dissertation focuses on the subject's conception and organization and the intercultural endeavours of US schools in Germany in two ways: First, historical research based on bibliographic resources regarding the school's history looks at the development of the program 1946 to 1970. A second perspective is given by a questionnaire survey, which asks Host Nation and American teachers about the current language and culture program within US schools in Germany --

Multilingualism is a crucial if often unrecognized marker of new European identities. In this collection of essays, we observe how a plurilinguist and pluricultural political entity practices and theorizes multilingualism. We ask which types of multilingualism are defined, encouraged or discouraged at the level of official policies, but also at the level of communities. We look at speakers of hegemonic or minority languages, at travellers and long-term migrants or their children, and analyse how their conversations are represented in official documents, visual art, cinema, literature and popular culture. The volume is divided into two parts that focus respectively on “Multilingual Europeâ€...

Policies and Practices for Teaching Sociocultural Diversity

Future teachers require specific training on democratic culture and social cohesion. By focusing on reflective thinking, training can enable them to situate themselves in diverse environments, develop a clearer sense of their ethnic and cultural identities and examine attitudes to different groups. Improving diversity management at school in Europe begins with initial teacher training establishments. This book is designed to provide a basis to help ensure that the needs of future teachers in this regard are met. It puts forward 18 "diversity competences" that were identified by a team of European specialists in teacher training between 2006 and 2009. In order to open up the debate on competences, four consultation sessions were organised in Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus and Estonia. These sessions provided an opportunity to discuss these competences with key players (civil servants, government representatives, teacher trainers, head teachers, researchers, teachers and students) from a national and topic-based perspective

This book represents a collection of papers that relate to the challenges and problems posed by the ever-changing and diversified nature of today’s classroom.
