Rural Transition and Transport in China

This book examines the rural transition and transportation in China. It covers demographic change, settlement transformation, and infrastructure development in rural areas, as well as changes in transportation expenditures, travel behavior, and accessibility of basic public services among rural Chinese residents. The book contributes to the new body of knowledge from an international perspective in three ways. First, it explores the changes in travel behavior of rural residents and related factors. Second, it provides new evidence on the relationship between rural social transformation and transportation infrastructure development. Third, it discusses the impact of transportation investments...

Nine Mathematical Challenges: An Elucidation

This volume stems from the Linde Hall Inaugural Math Symposium, held from February 22–24, 2019, at California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California. The content isolates and discusses nine mathematical problems, or sets of problems, in a deep way, but starting from scratch. Included among them are the well-known problems of the classification of finite groups, the Navier-Stokes equations, the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, and the continuum hypothesis. The other five problems, also of substantial importance, concern the Lieb–Thirring inequalities, the equidistribution problems in number theory, surface bundles, ramification in covers and curves, and the gap and type problems in Fourier analysis. The problems are explained succinctly, with a discussion of what is known and an elucidation of the outstanding issues. An attempt is made to appeal to a wide audience, both in terms of the field of expertise and the level of the reader.

A Companion to Transport, Space and Equity

With social inequity in urban spaces becoming an increasing concern in our modern world, The Elgar Companion to Transport, Space and Equity explores the relationships between transport and social equity. Transport systems and infrastructure investment can lead to inequitable travel behaviours, with certain socio-demographic groups using particular parts of the transport system and accessing particular activities and opportunities.

Using the exogeneity of the one-child policy, this study examines the influence of the number of siblings on individual entrepreneurial choice behavior and potential mechanisms. The difference-in-difference and IV estimation results show that the implementation of the one-child policy significantly reduces the probability of individual entrepreneurship; that is, the higher the number of siblings, the higher the probability that individuals choose to start a business. Further, we find that the number of siblings only has a significant impact on the choice of being a survival entrepreneur, without affecting the choice of being an opportunity entrepreneur. As for the potential mechanisms, we check human capital, credit constraints, and psychological traits. The results indicate that Q-Q trade-off and credit constraints can explain siblings' effect on entrepreneurship; however, there is no evidence that psychological traits play a role.
