Drug resistance is a growing problem in today's society. Successful drugs are constantly being developed but there is always the risk that a small percent of the drug's target will be immune. These survivors can then lead to a new population, resistant to the action of this drug. New drugs are continuously under development to combat this problem, but these can, in turn, lead to new resistant populations. This problem is universal whether the target is to destroy a deadly virus, or an insect which is ravaging crop production. Development of new drugs is difficult and time consuming so it is of crucial importance that we understand the processes behind drug resistance. "Molecular Genetics of Drug Resistance" forms a vital and timely review of the genetic processes behind drug resistance. Starting with an overview of the area, each chapter focuses on a particular target with important sections on drug resistance in malaria and in cancer. Each chapter has been written by an acknowledged expert in the field and the careful work of the editors has ensured a consistent approach and presentation.

Microbial Resistance to Drugs

Most often when the subject of antimicrobial resistance is discussed, the organizational emphasis is on individual antimicrobial agents or groups of agents. Thus we tend to see discussion of resistance to f3-lactams, tetracyclines, amino glycosides etc. In this book many of the authors were asked to emphasize the mechanism of resistance in their discussion and from that to show how susceptibility to various agents was affected. In part this was done to help emphasize the enormous contribution that the study of antimicrobial resistance has made to our understanding of fundamental physiologic and genetic processes in bacteria. When one looks back over the study of antimicrobial resistance, it ...

First published in 1972, Handbook for History Teachers is intended to be a general and comprehensive work of reference for teachers of history in primary and secondary schools of all kinds. The book covers all aspects of teaching history: among them are the use of sources, world history, art and history; principles of constructing a syllabus and the psychological aspects of history teaching. The bibliographical sections are arranged on three parts: school textbooks, a section on audio-visual-aids and, finally, books for the teacher and possibly for the sixth form. It thoroughly investigates and critiques the various methods employed in teaching history within classrooms and suggests alternatives wherever applicable. Diligently curated by the Standing Sub-Committee in History, University of London Institute of Education, the book still holds immense value in the understanding of pedagogy.

Who Da Man?

This book offers a highly original approach to Black masculinities and sport in Canada. The book will be especially exciting for those interested in decolonisation, culture, and the intersection of identity, sport, and politics. Who Da Man attempts to account for the ways that Black Diasporic identifications intersect with the dominant misogyny and homophobia in contemporary men's sporting cultures. Abdel-Shehid suggests that thinking about Diaspora in the making of contemporary Black sporting cultures provides a more comprehensive framework than that which looks at sport solely within the framework of nations and nationalism. He further argues that Canadian hegemonic ideas and practices typ...
