The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies began compiling data on the number of black elected officials in the United States in 1970. Since then the number of black elected officials has increased steadily each year. In the 1990 edition of this annual volume, black elected officials sworn into office for the 1990 term are listed by state and indexed alphabetically.
