The first involves six apparently unrelated individuals who all suffer inexplicable life-altering events. Mel is also pursuing a serial blackmailer but just as she's about to prove the link between this man and the six bizarre events, she's ordered to back off. So why are her bosses interfering with her investigations? Who are they trying to protect? And how far will they go to stop her? The answers come from a totally unexpected source.

Comrades

The Spanish Civil War served as an ideological and physical battleground for visionary Americans wishing to combat the spread of fascism. Harry Fisher was one such idealist who became a solider in the famed Abraham Lincoln Brigade, the American contingent of international volunteers dedicated to defeating Franco's forces. ø Fisher was one of the earliest American volunteers and one of the few to participate in all the major battles. Under a barrage of shells, bombs, and bullets for eighteen months, he lost his illusions about war's efficacy in solving political issues. To this day a despondence often overwhelms him when he recalls a family photograph he found jutting from the pocket of a slain fascist soldier. His involvement taught him that up close, the dead, whether fascist soldiers or his own fallen comrades, looked alike. ø This is a war story, simply told. Yet it is also a complex story about a young man testing his ideology in the harsh realities of battle.

The lines between love & hate, business & pleasure become blurred, as you are thrown into a world of shady criminals, bent coppers and beautiful women. Can you keep up? Or is Heaven too much for you?

'Compelling . . . this is a fable for the times ahead that feels essential' Irish Times 'Stunning, insightful, deeply humane prose . . . Fisher indicts all of us yet still offers hope that we may change the ending of this story' Olivia Sudjic A young man is found brutally murdered in the middle of the snowed-in village of Wivenhoe. Over his body stands another man, axe in hand. The gathered villagers must deal with the consequences of an act that no-one tried to stop. WIVENHOE is a haunting novel set in an alternate present, in a world that is slowly waking up to the fact that it is living through an environmental disaster. Taking place over twenty-four hours and told through the voices of a mother and her adult son, we see how one small community reacts to social breakdown and isolation. Samuel Fisher imagines a world, not unlike our own, struck down and on the edge of survival. Tense, poignant, and set against a dramatic landscape, WIVENHOE asks the question: if society as we know it is lost, what would we strive to save? At what point will we admit complicity in our own destruction?

Research on the Cox family genealogy was begun by Rev. Simeon O. Coxe (1877-1955). Verl F. Weight (one of the many descendants of the Cox family) and Mrs. Charles W. Cox (Willie Miller) further researched, compiled and published the information into the first edition in mimeographed copies in 1962. When time took its toll on these copies and years of work began to fade away, Mary Carol Cox volunteered to retype and publish As A Tree Grows into a paperback book.
