Advanced Imaging in Coronary Artery Disease

In Advanced Imaging in Coronary Artery Disease, the role of several imaging techniques in diagnosing atherosclerosis, assessment of myocardial ischemia, myocardial viability, and heart failure are broadly discussed. The issues derived from cardiac PET are presented in relation to the conventional techniques, such as echocardiography, SPECT and MRI. In addition, newer imaging techniques such as intracoronary ultrasound, electron beam computed tomography, and Raman spectroscopy are given wide attention. The effects of drug treatment, such as anti-ischemic and lipid-lowering drugs, are also evaluated. This book will assist clinical cardiologists, nuclear medicine physicians, fellows in cardiology and nuclear medicine, radiochemists, basic research fellows, and technicians, in understanding the new advances in clinical cardiac PET.

Integrative Computational Modeling of Calcium Handling and Cardiac Arrhythmias

Integrative Computational Modeling of Calcium Handling and Cardiac Arrhythmias

Cardiomyocyte calcium handling is a major determinant of excitation-contraction coupling. Alterations in one or more calcium-handling proteins may induce arrhythmias through the formation of ectopic activity, direct and indirect ion-channel regulation, and structural remodeling. Due to the complex and tight interactions between calcium and other molecules within a cardiomyocyte, it remains experimentally challenging to study the exact contributions of calcium-handling abnormalities to arrhythmogenesis. Multiscale computational studies performed in close collaboration with laboratory experiments create new opportunities to unravel the mechanisms of arrhythmogenesis. This thesis describes the roles of integrative computational modeling in unraveling the arrhythmogenic consequences of calcium-handling abnormalities.

The ESC Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine

The ESC Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine

The ESC Textbook of Cardiovascular Medicine is a teaching text that contains the knowledge base needed by every general cardiologist and specialist cardiologist as a background to their specialty interest. The textbook content is based on the Core Curriculum of the European Society of Cardiology, making the textbook essential reading for all cardiology trainees. The textbook contains much of the evidence base that is used to derive the practice guidelines published by the European Society of Cardiology, and its contents will be used as a basis for testing the knowledge of trainees who seek to qualify as cardiologists and of cardiologists who must re-accredit their status as cardiovascular he...

Heart Health

The idea that heart disease is the most common cause of death gets misinterpreted to mean that any and all heart condition is an imminent danger to life and needs to be aggressively tested and treated. In the absence of good, trustworthy information, patients are guided mostly by their gut reaction and instincts when they are diagnosed with heart disease. With the misperception that more is better, they all too often end up relying on the test and treatment recommendations of their harried healthcare provider, who could well be influenced by accepted norms, cognitive biases, legal concerns, or economic considerations, whether consciously or not. Such decisions and recommendations lead to the...

Cardiac Mechano-Electric Coupling and Arrhythmias offers a thoroughly reviewed compendium written by leading experts in the field on the mechanism and consequences of cardiac mechano-electrical coupling. Its coverage ranges from stretch-activated ion channels to mechanically induced arrhythmias and mechanical interventions for heart rhythm correction. Information is grouped into logical sections, from molecular mechanisms, to cell, tissue and whole organ responses, right through to patient-based observations and insight emerging from clinical trials. The information provided carefully highlights both consensus insight and current shortcomings in our understanding of cardiac mechano-electric coupling. The book has been thoroughly revised and expanded since publication of the first edition in 2005, extensively updated to reflect recent developments in the field, and now offers a more balanced view of mechano-electrical interactions in the heart and develops a more clinical focus. Written with the practising cardiologist and junior doctor in mind, it offers interesting new insight for the established physician with an interest in cardiac arrhythmogenesis and heart rhythm management.
