Politics and the Religious Imagination is the product of a group of interdisciplinary scholars each analyzing the connections between religious narratives and the construction of regional and global politics, combining a set of theoretical and philosophic insights with several case studies that represent varied geographies and religious customs. The past decade has seen increasing interest in the links between religion and politics, and this edited volume seeks to take religion seriously as a motivator of action. Few studies have attempted to bring together the multi-disciplinary work in this burgeoning field of study and this work takes a global perspective, using a variety of contexts incl...

The Politics of Two Sudans

This book gives a vivid account of the political history of Sudan from 1821 to 1969. It shows why Sudan is in reality two Sudans, which differ in every substantive aspect: geographical, ethnic, cultural, and religious. North and South Sudan became one sovereign state by colonial fiat. Since 1821 the Turko-Egyptian rules in Sudan sealed the fate of the Southern people. From that time onwards Southern Sudan has been laid bare to foreign intervention and influence. The Southern Sudanese have experienced all kinds of exploitation, including the slave trade, subjection to alien cultures and religions, colonialism, and finally outright annexation to the Arab North. This foreign interference was, and still is, fiercely resisted by the Southerners. This book traces, analyzes, and evaluates their protracted struggle. The analysis leads to the logical conclusion that the two Sudans will inevitably in the near future become separate, sovereign states.

Impact of Political Stability on Economic Development

The main theme of this study is chosen in response to the general consensus on the importance of conducting a comprehensive study that may shape the economic policies and promote the business sector as well as the government and other organizations. However, the key question posed by this study is whether the theory that political stability fosters economic development is simply the wishful thinking of people who value both stability and growth or whether it is a delusion of those who believe that most developing countries may enjoy rapid growth if they are stable. The importance of this study is clear: South Sudan is confronted with enormous challenges of administrative, ethnic, political, ...

In response to the ongoing mass murder of Black Sudanese groups in the Darfur region of Sudan by Sudanese government troops and Arab militias, the US government sent the Darfur Atrocities Documentation Team to various points along the Chad/Sudan in order to interview refugees from Darfur. Based on their investigation, US Secretary of State Colin Powell formally announced that ‘genocide has occurred in Darfur and may still be occurring.’ The United States officially accused the government of Sudan of perpetrating genocide - the first time that any government has officially and publicly accused another government of genocide. As a result the United States played a key role in pressuring th...

Black Africa versus Arab North Africa: The Great Divide

This work examines the gulf that exists in terms of relations between the Arab countries of North Africa and the predominantly black countries south of the Sahara desert. Subjects covered include the hostility black people face in the North African countries and why the people in those countries don't even consider themselves to be Africans but consider themselves to be a part of the Middle East, not Africa, in spite of the fact that their countries are on the African continent. The brutal treatment black Africans suffer in all the countries of North Africa - Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt - has caused severe strains on relations between the people of sub-Saharan Africa and those...

Going Global

Going Global

While English has become the lingua franca in science, business, and other fields, scholars still grapple with the implications of its adoption in many other settings and cultures. To what extent should English be introduced and taught in schools around the world? Who “owns” the English language and can therefore shape its structure and aims? What are world Englishes and how can teachers demonstrate them to their students? Is English the language of the oppressor, an imperialist tool, or does global English offer an opportunity for greater understanding and cooperation amongst peoples and cultures? This volume of critical essays explores these and other questions surrounding language, ed...
