In 1927, Mazo de la Roche was an impoverished writer in Toronto when she won a $10,000 prize from the American magazine Atlantic Monthly for her novel Jalna. The book became an immediate bestseller. In 1929, the sequel Whiteoaks also went to the top of bestseller lists. Mazo went on to publish 16 novels in the popular series about a Canadian family named Whiteoak, living in a house called Jalna. Her success allowed her to travel the world and to live in a mansion near Windsor Castle. Mazo created unforgettable characters who come to life for her readers, but she was secretive about her own life and tried to escape the public attention her fame brought.

Heather Kirk's WARSAW SPRING is designated for 'young adults'. This 'old adult' enjoyed it thoroughly and admires Kirk's success, particularly in the character of Eva, the narrator. She is eighteen years old and totally alienated from everyone in her Edmonton world. Her mother, Magda, her step-father, George, even her beloved Polish grandmother, Babka, all of them are completely outside of Eva's understanding and sympathy. Kirk is good at the dialogue that Eva engages in with others -- and especially good at her own internal dialogue. When she runs away to Poland to find her relatives, and, she hopes, her father whom she has never seen, she begins a rocky maturing journey that was to me comp...

We ... a Spirit Seeking Harmony for a World That's Out of Sync

In We ... a spirit seeking harmony for a world that's out of sync, she takes the reader on a faith journey modeled after that of the prophet Isaiah, yet sets it in the absolute present. Tears flow through her tellings of pain so personal we think they are our own. And perhaps they are. But "We" never leaves us alone, offering possibilities in the communion of family, friends and a God that burns us with His healing fire. Even 'non-poetry readers' will find the text in "We" as natural and readable as prose, beautiful, even while the poems reveal the tragedies that befall us in this world. With Ms. Kirk's assistance, we travel from grief and pain to hope and purpose. Through the chapter headings 'out of sync', 'who will go?', 'coal to my lips', 'send me', and 'go, ' she reminds us that no matter what we have lived through, we are never so broken that we cannot go and minister to another in need.

I Water Dead Plants

A lazy gardener's memoir of hope against all odds. Hardly a "How to" book; more of a "What I did and didn't do." Full of approachable poetry that is more prose-story with a LOT of humor, while addressing symbolically themes of renewal, faith, belief, grief, resurrection and hope. Author and Photographic Artist Heather J. Kirk surrounds herself with flowers - at least on the walls of her home. In spite of a love for all things botanical, she can't seem to grow a garden or sustain a flowering plant, though her patio and home boast several healthy succulents. To those who point to the mostly healthy cacti and agave, "They're used to drought," she explains. She has found a way to resolve her dil...

Who Were the Whiteoaks and where was Jalna?

Heather Kirk offers new sources for the fictional Whiteoak family in the world-famous Jalna novels by Canadian author Mazo de la Roche. The Whitesoaks were modelled on an ingenious combination of close relatives of de la Roche and her cousin and life-long companion Caroline Clement. What's more, the Whiteoak's estate, Jalna, was based on a combination of several large properties owned by these relatives in York and Simcoe counties. For the sources of the Whiteoaks and Jalna, biographers would have looked beyond Halton County where de la Roche and Clement lived for a few years when they were in their thirties. They also should have looked beyond Peel County where de la Roche and Clement stayed for a few seasons when they were in their forties. De la Roche's knowledge of rural life came primarily from the people and places of her childhood and youth.

In this dark and moving young adult novel, sixteen-year-old Naomi’s best friend has moved away, and Naomi herself is starting at a new high school. Curtis, the artistic guy she likes, seems to be avoiding her, making her feel alone and lonely. On top of lots of difficult homework and an awful part-time job, she also has problems at home. Her dying aunt has come to live with her family, Naomi’s mother seems to be on the verge of a breakdown, and her Polish father is absent and unsupportive. How can Naomi overcome all these negatives in her life? Over three harrowing months on the eve of the new millennium, the story emerges of a young woman finding strength and of a broken family mending. The action and circumstances of the book are laid bare in a series of diary entries, not only by Naomi, but also by her boyfriend, her mother, her mothers boyfriend, and Naomi’s employer, giving the reader a much fuller understanding of what brings Naomi and her mother to the brink of despair - and back.
