Robert Heaton (before 1595-after 1667) of Wharfe, Yorkshire, England, married three times and was the father of thirteen children, 1615-ca. 1655. His son, Robert Heaton (ca. 1641-1717), joined the Society of Friends, ca. 1667 and became a member of the Settle, Yorkshire Meeing. He and his wife, Alice, had at least five children, 1667-1679, bornat Wharfe. The family immigrated to America in 1682 and settled in Middletown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Their grandson, John Heaton (1690-1762), was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, the son of James and Mary Scope Heaton. He married twice and was the father of twelve children, 1724-1750. The family migrated to Hardwick, Sussex County, New Jersey, in 1743. Descendants listed lived in New Jersey, Illinois and elsewhere.

The King James Version of the Bible is seldom viewed as a radical text, yet the history of English Bible translation in the sixteenth century, culminating in the now-familiar King James Version, is a complex one, revealing that Bible translation did not occur in a vacuum but within a web of politics, shifting religious pressures and repressions. The struggle to translate the Bible into English is here examined within the political context of the age. Emphasis is placed upon the varying royal policies and how these resulted in policy swings and the subsequent encouragement or discouragement of religious change and new Bible translations. The book is arranged chronologically, spanning the changing environments for Bible translation under Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary, Elizabeth I, and James, who varied from forbidding such translations to encouraging them. A bibliography and index are included.
Though more than four hundred years have elapsed since the Bishops' Bible was first published in 1568, its story has never been adequately told. No book-length evaluation has been published, and no adequate bibliography is available for guidance in studying this least known of the Tudor-period Bibles. This neglect is surprising in that Shakespeare's earlier plays reflect his use of the Bishops' Bible and that the Bishops' Bible was used by the translators of the King James Version as the basis for their revision. This study depicts the religious, literary, and intellectual atmosphere that produced the Bishops' Bible, describes its place in sixteenth-century translations, re-evaluates its contribution to the study of the English Bible, and investigates the history and qualifications of the men invited to participate in the translation project. Attention is given to the artwork, the most elaborate of any in first editions of early English Bibles, and to the notes designed to correct the objectionable Calvinistic notes of the Geneva Bible. A presumption that the bishops would not prepare a better Bible until "a day after domesday" gives the title to this study--The Day after Domesday.
