A History of Collective Living
This book tells the story of communal living forms from about 1850 until the present day. The projects featured in this book are divided according to the motivations of their creators and users –economic, political, and social. The book also contains historical analysis and the identification of nine discrete development phases. The author investigates and compares different forms of housing and the way they developed until today. She illustrates how shared living, including the assurance of privacy, is practiced in Europe. Owing to its comprehensive documentation, the analysis of typologies, layout plans, and user and expert interviews, the book can also be seen as a handbook on communal living, offering a unique and detailed overview of this form of residential architecture. Per Kirkeby übereignete im Zuge der Ausstellungs- und Publikationsvorbereitungen dem Kunsthaus eine Schenkung von über zweihundert großformatigen Originalzeichnungen, so dass sich heute im Archiv des Kunsthaus Bregenz die bedeutendste Sammlung zu Kirkebys architektonischem Schaffen findet. Metamorphism
Materiality is a recurring and central issue in architecture. This book explains how materials are "constructed", how they become cultural substances. Metamorphism investigates the complex relationship between natural materials and technology, science and sensuality. Gottfried Semper (1803–1879) made the notion of Stoffwechsel the key element of his theory. With this concept he intended to explain how a structural form originally bound to a method of processing is transferred from one material to another, liberated from its original function. For the first time, the book investigates the subject from a historic point of view whilst reflecting on current interdisciplinary research. Examples from Aalto to Zumthor illustrate the specific aspects of historic and contemporary material concepts.
